Quantcast

The puppy we need a name for.

Last week we added the newest member to our family.

Is she not the most adorable blinking little cotton ball ever?** She is an 9-week Maltese. I have wanted a Maltese since I was a little girl and the desire has never gone away. I’m actually surprised…I thought I was a cat person, but really…it’s the toy dog I am utterly in love with, with the Maltese on the top of my list.

We took her for her first puppy grooming after these shots and she looks even CUTER, if you can believe it. All the groomers at Pet Smart LOVED her and there were about 15 people oohing and ahhing over her at the window. I was so proud. (Though I will NEVER have her groomed other than you see her. It’s called the puppy cut and I can’t stand Maltese dogs with long coats and a top knot. Besides, she’s a pet, not a show dog.) She isn’t quite a 2-pounds and I am trying to read everything I can to be a good dog owner. (It’s been awhile since I’ve owned a dog.)

We all love and adore her so much.

She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body and our entire family is intensely in love with her. Even Jonathan. I was SO surprised when he said I could have a small dog (he wanted a big one so we were at a 14-year impasse) so that I could have something good to think about during all my back pain and months in bed. And because I will have a little pal to do my walking therapy. She should be ready for a lead by the time I am ready to walk outside. And we’ll be able to go at about the same pace and length by then. :)

What we DON’T have for her?

A NAME.

Seriously…we need to come up with something SOON.

Since my son has a tortoise we named Fulffy I thought we might go for the ironic like “CHOPPER” (Think stand by Me, people.) but she is just too damn sweet for it.

I also ABHOR cliche names for all white dogs like “Snowflake” or the like.

Since we had a beloved cat named, Wilbur, we thought about ‘Charlotte’ but it just doesn’t fit. Really, We’ve thought about so many names, but we simply can’t come up with one. (I’m sure I’ll call her things like baby girl, my cute little button, ect. but we need one solid name to but on her licence and train her ect.)

So…I thought I’d turn to the Internet to see if you can look at her and throw out some names we may not have thought of.

Because at this point, despite my loathing of the Twilight series, I JUST may name her Renesmee at this point.*

What would you name her? Please help a girl out here. I have to start training her to recognize her name and I have never been this stuck. Spread word?

*I am SO totally kidding, I’d call her “Hey you!” before THAT. Just so you know.

** In my utter drugged out stupidity, I totally forgot to thank my friend, Holly Murdock, for taking these photos. My son broke the lens to my Nikon 3000 a few months ago and I have just been LOST without it. If anyone is selling one for a good price let me know. It’s killing me not getting photos of the kiddies and this puppy.

Oh my gosh she is the sweetest thing ever! I would call her Muppet. Or Pippa, Ruby, Poppy, something like that ;)

      avatar Sally J. says:

Pippa was the first name that popped into my head, SarahB! But I also like Coco / Coconut. My golly she’s cute. I’m gonna stop looking now before I lose my Cat Person cred…

Oh, Loralee, she’s perfect! Between Butterlump and Cottonball, your house is a major cuteness overload!

My name suggestion? “Milou” (pronounced mee-loo) -that’s the original French name for Tintin’s little white fox terrier :)

Love and powerful healing vibes coming your way (from Dublin),

      avatar loralee says:

I seriously have cuteness overload going on right now, no? I have to save my pennies to buy a basic lens for my Nikon 3000 (my son broke it). So I can post pics of Butterlump and the puppy. These were taken by my friend Holly. I am so on drugs I forgot to thank her in the post. I suck.

I love the those of a French or Gaelic name for white for her

      • 5
        avatar Vanessa says:

The Gaelic word for white is “bán” (pronounced “bawn”).

There is also an Irish girl’s name “Ailbhe” (pronounced al-va) which means white/bright.

And the name “Beibhinn” (pronounced “bay-veen” means white or fair lady.

Continued healing love to you, sweetie!

DH and I have a running joke that we’re going to get a small dog and name it General Simcoe (it’s a Canadian historical thing).

Anyway, I’m glad you have a cute little fluff ball to cheer you up and I hope your recovery is going well. Big hugs!!!!

    avatar Nyt says:

She looks wonderful! Someday, you’ll have to tell me the story of how you found her. Anyway, names…everyone here, is named after a movie star or character. I’ve covered all my favs, To kill a mockingbird, my cousin vinny, when harry met sally and Pinocchio. I also love silly names, things like FiFi, Puffy, and believe it or not, Spot. The “opposite” names are also fun. I had a friend who bred Red Nose PitBulls and his stud’s name…Pansy. Loved it! I’m so happy for you, and I can’t wait to see what you’ve picked!

  5. 8

I keep saying I’m gonna get a little fluffy white dog (we had Maltese dogs growing up) and name her Tater Tot or Polka Dot or something utterly ridiculous! I loved our dogs and for some reason fluffy white dogs need utterly ridiculous names I think. Our dogs growing up were Sassafras, Penelope, and Duchess. I named the first two and my mom picked Duchess.

    avatar CR says:

What about Lottie? Short for Charlotte, but a little bit cuter and younger.
Also, can I suggest that you share her breeder’s name so that other Utahans looking for Malteses know a reputable source?

    • 10
      avatar Della says:

      That’s a great idea :)

      • 11
        avatar loralee says:

She was HARD to find. I tried rescue but there were 2 maltese available. One was an adult (I was adamant about a puppy) and the other had severe issues with children.

There is ONE AKC (American Kennel Club) registered in Utah. She really just breeds so that people can have maltese pets…not a serious show dog breeder. Her name is bonnie and she lives in Saratoga springs by Utah lake. This little one was SO hard to find (Bonnie had to drive to the pan handle of Idaho to find this little one’s mama.).

Because of that…and because of how much fun I have had learning about my dog’s breed and training, etc. I have seriously thought about learning about what it takes to register as a breeder and let our girl have a few litters. We’ll see. It is not something I would take lightly, but I seriously think I knew just about as much (or more) than the breeder I got her from. Again: This would just be fore people wanting a Maltese as a pet…not a show dog. That takes someone with a LOT of experience. I just love my girl so much I would love it to be easier for others who want that same love, you know?

    avatar Jamie says:

Our 1st golden we named Chevy, after our car. Little strange, but it fit. Our 2nd we named Holly, because we got her before Christmas, and our 3rd we named Reese. Her mom and dad’s names were Riesie and Moose, so we sort of combimed them. She’s a little doll tho’, and deserves a doll type name. China maybe? Can’t wait to hear your choice and have fun with her!

    avatar Heidi says:

    Katniss?

  9. 15
    avatar SarahB says:

Or Pepper, since you don’t want a white name, hee

    • 16
      avatar loralee says:

I actually love the name Pepper for a dog but we can’t…or Pippa for that matter. My dad’s BELOVED (but I admit it…totally crazy) dog Pepper died on his birthday this year and it has about killed him. They are in their mid to late 70′s and my mom has put her foot down…no more pets. My father is crushed. This little one has helped his grieving heart a lot but yeah…Pepper and Pippa can’t happen though I LOVE them.

    avatar Kecia says:

Two syllable names seem best for dogs (IMO) She looks like a Pixie. Or a Zhu Zhu (zoo zoo) or maybe something more literal like: Honey. (Malta derives from the Greek word ???? (meli), “honey). Good luck!

  11. 18
    avatar Mir says:

She looks like a Zelda to me. And OMG she is the cutest. Congrats!!

  12. 21
    avatar Rebecca says:

we love puns on celebrity names. Sarah Jessica Barker, Reese Wooferspoon, Vivian Leash, Marilyn Monruff, Zooey Dogschanel, Kate Muttleton. These are all names i suggested for our mastiff…which the girls named Princess Coco Jane the Beautiful.

  13. 22
    avatar Pogue says:

Falcon? …as in the Maltese Falcon… work with me here… :-)

  14. 23
    avatar Elizabeth says:

    Fang
    or Mopsy

  15. 24
    avatar Amy says:

In the Looney Tunes theme of things, I was originally thinking Penelope (Pepe Le Pew’s kitty)but you know, she just really looks like a sweet little Petunia. :)

  16. 25
    avatar Melonie says:

Ack! Holy cuteness overload! She’s precious, Loralee. You’ll be a great furbaby mommy. Oh, and major good guy points to Jonathan. She will be wonderful therapy for you, emotionally and physically. OK, a name suggestion. It’s what I would name a pup if I could get the hubby to relent on the small dog issue.

    S. Cally Wags or just “Cally”

Scalawag, a play on the English word “rapscallion”, meaning one who is mischievous; a rascal.

    • 26
      avatar loralee says:

He gets major, MAJOR points for this. I NEVER thought he would saw yes and I thought even less that he would love and adore her as much as he does. It’s so cute seeing this huge man snuggling with this wee little puppy.

  17. 27
    avatar trishk says:

She looks like a “Poppy” to me. She is so cute!!!!

  18. 28
    avatar Barbara says:

Eloise. Then you can call her Miss Ellie.

    She is super adorable! Congrats!

(3 dogs household, Daisy, Opal and Luna. Did not name all the dogs.)

  19. 29
    avatar Sarah says:

Too cute!! She looks like a Maisy, Millie, or Delilah to me :)

  20. 30
    avatar Stephanie says:

I’m going to go with the obvious and say you should name her “Kraft.” Or is that too cheesy… *groan*

    I couldn’t resist.

  21. 31
    avatar Laura K says:

Congratulations! She is absolutely adorable. I have a sister who has a tiny little dog too and she has the cutest name for her. Her name is “Pocket”. Since she is so tiny she could just about fit in your pocket! I hope all is going well with your back and that your pain is at least manageable. Have fun with your new little friend, whatever her name ends up being!

  22. 32
    avatar Carolyn says:

I don’t even LIKE the name Renesmee, and I know you said it as a joke, but when I read it I was like, “Oh, that would fit so perfectly!” She LOOKS like a Renesmee! You’ve given your dog the perfect name, even if you hate it ;)

  23. 33
    avatar Yvonne I says:

I lIke both Pippa and Poppy – but since someone already said those too, how about Pippi (as in Longstocking…?)

  24. 34
    avatar MaryEllen says:

Seriously? I thought it was soooooo obvious..Lily. When you said you were getting a ball of fluff, this is what I was so sure you were going to announce that you were naming her. After all she is your baby girl.

    • 35
      avatar loralee says:

We SOOOOO Thought of it. THEN we thought…what if there is the tiniest chance we have an “oops” and an even SMALLER chance that it’s a girl and my name is taken? I. would. not. handle. it. well.

When are you going to come and see her and the finished house? The decorating sucks…we moved in and I went down but I’d love for you to see it and the wee one and YOU. Call me?

  25. 36
    avatar Wendy says:

How about “Kitty”? I always wanted a dog named Kitty.

  26. 37

She looks like a Molly to me! Maybe even Molly Mae!

  27. 39
    avatar Jenn Bo says:

    Sophie
I love the suggestions for Poppy or Pippi.
Toto? Doesn’t seem quite “cute” enough.
    Hazel / Haze
DC – for diet coke =)
    Daisy

Those ears are the cutest thing ever. I used to dream about a maltese too…

  28. 41
    avatar Dionna says:

Lola is my vote….tho must say I like Pippa too!! she is absolute perfection!!

  29. 42
    avatar MJ says:

Emiko is the name my mom picked for her pekingnese–It’s Japanese for beautiful, I think. I googled it, and it came up “child graced by beauty”.

anyway, I think it fits this little cutie!

I also like Pippa or Poppy.

  30. 43
    avatar Thumper says:

Go for irony. Name her Tank :)

  31. 45
    avatar Teri Carter says:

Missy! Little Miss Prissy, I love the name Missy for a little dog.

  32. 46

She is SO CUTE!! I second the name ‘pippa’ — or DITA!

  33. 47
    avatar Carina says:

    Lieutenant Petunia Cottonweather.

    or just Pansy?

  34. 48
    avatar Heather says:

what’s with the product placement? You thinking of the name Kraft?
IDK, she looks like a Baby to me, but maybe that’s too cutesy for your liking?

  35. 50
    avatar Heather says:

    yes Pippa is nice also

  36. 51
    avatar Karen says:

I keep thinking “Polly” – like Polly Pocket – I also like “Hope”.

Maybe name her after a strong female character from a book you really like? Or a play on a composer or part of a song that has inspired you.

The royal couple just adopted a black cocker spaniel puppy and his name is “lupo” which is italian for wolf – maybe a french/german/italian/spanish word that means something cute. I know a little (obnoxious) dog named “Boca” (spanish for mouth)

  37. 52
    avatar Mo says:

I always love the very regal and big names for dogs. What about Penelope?

  38. 53
    avatar Jessi says:

I love the name Pippa for her. It feels so perfect.

I think maybe Daisy too? Something short.

  39. 54
    avatar WickedSteppMom says:

I know it’s a bit deranged, but the first thing that pops into my head is Edelweiss…I mean, c’mon: “Edelweiss, Edelweiss
    Every morning you greet me
Small and white clean and bright
You look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow
    Bloom and grow forever…”
You could call her Ed for short. ;)

  40. 55

    Since you’re a singer, I would go with a singer’s name.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was the first classically trained soloists I ever saw. She was amazing and inspired me to continue singing through high school.

So, my vote’s for Kiri or another singer who inspires you the way that she did for me.

  41. 56
    avatar Allisonjd says:

I like the Pippa and Poppy suggestions as well.

I also like Wren and Nora. :)

    avatar Katie says:

I’m a fan of naming pets with old people names. Our dog is named Frank and it’s just so perfect for him. What about something like Stella?

  43. 58
    avatar zeghsy says:

She’s adorable. Enjoy her, regardless what you name her.

  44. 59
    avatar Della says:

My 4yo suggests “BandAid”, “Noodle”, and “Nibben”.

    High quality suggestions. *rolleyes*

He’s still talking while I type this… it’s degenerating into Luken-dupis… Noopen-dweegen… Chicken… Poop-gandalf (I… seriously, he made that up all on his own. And yes, he knows who Gandalf is).

“Niggen, or Nip” was his last ditch effort.

  45. 60
    avatar Kristi says:

Beyond cute! Lucky you! Just call her “Killer” since it certainly doesn’t fit her, and she will then fit in with the turtle.

  46. 61
    avatar abby says:

We are fans of the old people names here, too…we have a Stu and an Alice. Some others we considered were June, Francis/Fran, Betty, Kate, and Edith.

  47. 62
    avatar formerly 4 says:

Ours were/are Kramer (Seinfeld), Nog (after a Star Trek character) and Ferguson (for the Papillion Chihuahua- a perfectly french/latin name don’t you think?)
What about a character from a broadway musical? She already looks like a diva.
I am thrilled to see that you were able to get one. Let the healing begin!

    avatar Verna says:

Choose from these names: Cheesy, Alessy, Sasha, Petunia, Pepper, Cheesecurls, Cindy, Looney, Mathley, Yuyu. Whatever! Sure your maltese is such a cuteypie.

    • 65
      avatar loralee says:

In honesty, she’ll probably have a ton of names: My little button, my little princess, baby girl, wee one, bitsy. I’m sure it will calm down but my family like nick names a LOT.

  49. 66

What day of the week did you go get her? Or decide to get her? That might be cute. She’s totally adorable.

Showed it to my 10yr old daughter, she suggested Kiki. “Mom, she’s clearly a Kiki.. imagine calling a little ball of fluff, here kiki, come here”

    avatar Leisa says:

How about Bunny or Bunnie since it is almost Easter?

  55. 76
    avatar Abigail says:

I came to suggest Bunny too! That was my first thought when I saw here besides SQUEEEEE! SO ADORABLE! She’s just like a fuzzy widdle bunny.

Sorry, cute little dogs bring out the baby talk in me.

  56. 77
    avatar Rex says:

She looks like a priscilla or presley to me.

  57. 78
    avatar Diana Croshaw says:

Please not Daisy! Nearly every dog I know is named Bella (barf) and every other dog is Daisy. The dog we just got was Daisy before we changed it to Aggie. I like Eloise… And you could call her weezie! Poppy is cute too! Congrats on your new little bundle of cuteness!!!

  58. 79
    avatar Lesa says:

We named our all-white husky Grace, though she is frequently called Gracie & Tootsie.

She is so calm and serene, so I kind of wanted a name to reflect that, so I thought about Serena, but I’m not really a fan of the name.

Her name was Pumpkin when we got her, but that just didn’t fit.

How about Shelby, Maggie, Josie or Sugar? Any of those sound good?

  59. 80

Joy. Wasn’t that one of Charlotte’s daughter’s names, in Charlotte’s Web?

    Katherine Audrey Hepburn? ;)

She looks all regal and stuff. It works in my head. Congrats on the new puppy.

My grandfather always tells me that dogs should have two syllable names because it somehow makes it easier for their training… One syllable names are ok, but two are better apparently. I have nothing to back this up other than my Opa is an old Irish man and I just do whatever it is he tells me to.

I think she looks like a Roxy or Moxie… no real reason, that’s just what came to me.

  62. 83
    avatar L Black says:

I know how important dogs can be for healing both body and spirit. there is just something about them that makes you feel better. I have a sweet little dog that is my constant shadow and companion. She does love all others in the family but she is truly my dog (according to her). Any time I have had to be sick and in bed recouperating for any reason, she was right there with me. I AM hers and she is mine. :) I hope your new little bundle of fluff with stuff is that for you as well. They bring a smile when it is dark and bleak, they love you no matter what, they are a great listening ear when noone else seems to notice or care.

I once read a book where the pet was name Phideux (pronounced Fido). Love it!

I saw Poppy from a couple of replies and think that is very cute! Also, why not just name her “Diva”?

My sister in law has a maltese and his name is Falkor from Never Ending Story. I think it’s really cute, but I think Falkor is probably a boy name.

  67. 88
    avatar Aero-Bracero says:

    Call her M&M – short for Marsh Mellow;
    Shug – Sugar;
or let your youngest son name her.

I hope your post surgery is going well.

    Petunia is a good name.

    Spark?

    Giblet.

    She is adorable.

I miss Lex. (His first name was Caroll, Carol for the pup?)

You mentioned Charlotte…I love it for on her liscence, etc. Then you could call her Charley or something. Charlie…Charli? At any rate, I think that would be adorable! Cause she’s adorable and I am so happy you found each other! Enjoy that bundle of love, Loralee! :)
