Did y’all have fun?

HALLOWEEN 2011

We gather annually for Halloween with our friends, Max and Brigitte, at their house. Max & Bridgy are some of our oldest and dearest friends. Max and my husband have been BFF’s since Cub Scouts. (They are also disgustingly good looking.)

Aside from all the festivities and dinner, we also always take a family photo on their front porch. This year was no exception, except that we were later than usual and so photos took place outside in the dark, which doesn’t make for the best photos.

For the last, oh, 14-years or so, I have wanted to do a Titanic costume and THIS WAS OUR YEAR! I had an amazing friend, Mary Ellen, who agreed to make my dress and I totally have the hair for it right now. (This photo is more accurate of how it looked than the porch photos. It was pretty dark by the time we were able to take pictures.)

Jonathan was going to go as The Titanic.

The actual ship.

BEST COSTUMES EVER, RIGHT?! It might have rivaled 2007 when we went as Dog & Beth the Bounty Hunters.

Except that due to the huge increase in my husband’s work load and mysterious lack of our jigsaw, we didn’t have time/energy to put together his costume. (IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO GREAT. Sigh.)

So, I made him dress up like Gopher from The Love Boat, and called him my personal HMS Titanic Cabana Boy.

It works for me.

Christopher went as The Peanut Butter Jelly Time Banana (I know.) And Aaron is a little monkey to go with the banana.

James went as EMO AND ANGST FILLED TEENAGER.

So, he pretty much went as himself. Only with black eyeliner and purple hair. ;)

I let the boys take pillow caseses bags with one exception. We love getting Butterlump his Halloween bucket from McDonald’s. It’s become a ritual for me to take the boys there for lunch and get a Happy Meal Halloween bucket for Aaron and then James and Christopher help him decorate it before Trick or Treating. It’s a perfect size for him and currently it is his favorite thing on the planet.

While the kiddies were out collecting candy with Jon and Max, Bridgy and I chilled and laughed a great deal with our long-time pal, Brian. He makes a spectacularly comfortable pillow. Just so you know.

And Bridgy and I had some fun and swapped costumes. I LOVE hers. Very Austen and very comfy. And just so freaking pretty, no?

When the boys came back we watched the kiddies trade and sort their candy and decided that we should have a reality TV show called “Brother Husbands”. Heh.

All in all, it was a great holiday and the kids and grown ups had a lot of fun.

And I am seriously digging this whole Jane Austen costume of  Bridgy’s.

Maybe next year I will make Jonathan go as Mr. Knightly to my Emma. (He is pushing for Buck Rodgers and Wilma, but there is no way I am subjecting the world to my pancake-like heiny in shiny, spandex hotpants.)

And to close this post, I would like to formally state that I have no pertinent information to add about the mystery of all the Almond Joy candy bars that are missing from my kid’s Halloween candy. ;)

How was your Halloween? What costumes did you get for your kiddies? Did you dress up? What did you go as? I’d love to know!

(AND…do you monitor your kid’s candy intake or just let them go hog-wild and get it over with? I’ve always been torn on that one!)

xoxo

    You all look fantastic!

And the candy? Well, we don’t really celebrate Halloween down in Aust (though more are getting dressed up each year), so I can only compare it to Christmas day. My motto – once it’s gone, it’s gone. They can only eat it once, and if it means a ratty day then that’s what happens. Though our daughter is a saver and our son an eater.

Great pictures! Looks like so much fun! Those costumes are awesome!

We went as a witch (not to scary, my hat was pink) and a ninja. The kids were the tooth fairy and a princess.

As for the candy, I pared it down to only the stuff they really like and for the next few days they can have 1-2 pieces a day if they are eating well otherwise. If anything, it has our toddler eating more broccoli to ensure she gets the chocolate. Haha.

We’re not really into Halloween but Charlie had a blast. Thankfully he’s not into candy, even at almost 7 years old. I’ve trained him well though – all bubblegum and chocolate go to Mommy, no questions asked. We will be throwing away candy in the next few months and Charlie will not miss it at all.

i just wear this tshirt i got at target YEARS ago that says “miss witch” on it.
years ago i was on maui for halloween and they had a huge parade where groups of people dressed up to create a theme. one of the best ones was the titanic. they had a bunch of people behind a ship facade and another group under some white tarp. they would walk along and about every 50 feet so someone would yell “iceberg!” and the “titanic” would crash into the “iceberg” and sink. it was pretty awesome.
there were also naked guys with only body paint on. just sayin :)

I am glad we have this tradition! Wish I would have looked 1/2 as good as you did as Rose. =)

I love your creative costumes year after year. (I still mention the Billy Mays, Flo and Oxy Clean baby to friends-loved those!)

For the first year ever, neither of my kids went trick or treating. One dressed up as an Angry bird to pass out candy, and the other went to school as Harry Potter. I think the fact that the monster sized tub of candy was filled with all their suggestions made them think it was better to stay home and just pick out what they wanted from the bowl.

And I’d fight you for the Almond Joys, because one of mine counts that as his favorite, so there are none left.

You all look lovely. Very nice job on the dresses.
We only had six kids come to the door, so the two bags of Almond Joys are still here. I just brought them in to work (don’t need all that sugar myself).

Love the costumes and the photos of you laughing on the couch are gorgeous!

Our little guy went as Diego and every time someone asked him what he was dressed up as he sang them the ENTIRE theme song. That’ll teach ‘em.

We let him go hog wild and get it over with.
