I would really appreciate it. (Especially if you are a cop or lawyer or Fed-like type of Internet person.) (But hey, I will take commentary from any and all on this. Even if it’s just a hug or a high-five.)
Why am I looking for help?
Let me tell you a little story.
It’s about a women named Mia.
Also known as Mia Bergman.
Also, also known as Mia Szabo-Bautista-Bergman.
Also, also, ALSO known as Maria Francesca Ditas Chantal Cristina Molina Szabo.
Take your pick.
It’s ALSO about a blogger who was witty, and pretty, and gay.
(The happy kind, not the sexual orientation kind.) (Which kind of fills me with regret some days since I usually get how chicks think WAY more than men.)(Sorry, dudes, I CERTAINLY like your ilk, but it’s true.) (And girls have cuter bits than boys.)(I actually think the day the final design for boy bits were due God was out sick with the flu and their only option was to have Bob the sandwich delivery guy fill in.)(In fact, I am probably about 21.8% lesbian, now that I think about it.) (But that still would make me a poser, so ya know…I’m straight.)(Ok, this really was not supposed to turn into a post about how much of a lesbian I am or am not.) (Moving on to the issue at hand.)
ANYWAY…
Maria Francesca Ditas Chantal Cristina Molina Szabo Bautista Bergman.
I pretty much loathe the day I ever became aware of that name.
She has been a pain in the ass from the MOMENT I heard it.
Which would have been TWO-AND-A-HALF YEARS AGO.
In July of 2008, I woke up to 3 emails from different readers telling me that they noticed a blog on Cafe Mom had ripped off a couple of successful posts of mine.
I was pissed.
Little did I know what a chain of events it would unleash, OR that it would be following me around TWO-AND-A-HALF YEARS later.
But, see…Mia Bergmen is apparently NOT just a nare-do-well blogger that rips off the writing of other bloggers because she has no personal imagination of her own.
She is also apparently a con, thief, scam-artist and all-around-wench of a person that has ripped off thousand and thousands of dollars from friends, family, good-hearted people and random people on the Internet.
And it looks like she does a good deal of this scamming through the Internet. Apparently she baits on MySpace, Blogs,Facebook, etc.–contacting old friends with even the slightest relationship and building trust with them before money gets involved. She promises goods, a cheap rental in Hawaii, needs a loan, whatever. Her specialty seems to be in telling tales about designer purses from her ex that she needs to sell for cheap! And as most people are good and trusting and so they give her money.
And then when it is time to collect the trouble starts.
The excuses.
That apparently include faking her own daughter’s DEATH. (Y’all know my history and how very, VERY angry and sick this particular tidbit makes me.)
SO WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO WITH ALL OF THIS?!
When she rips people off and they realize something is up and there may be more to her than they thought?
They Google her.
And then they find me.
They find my blog post about her.
AND they find the TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY TWO COMMENTS outlining disgust, victimization and her all-around asshattery.
You don’t know how I WISH they had found it before sending her money. (I know they do, too.)
The stories make me sad.
Angry.
Livid.
Helpless.
Keep in mind, she only ripped off my words. There is no crime she has committed against me that I can really act on.
But others?
She’s allegedly taken a load of money from them.
And I would love to be able to point them in a direction of where to go or what to do when they find this or contact me. What can they DO to get help besides just writing or commenting out their frustration? (Not that I mind hearing from them, mind you!) Where do they go for help? Can they band together on it? What is the best course of action for them?
This is not a one or two person thing.
I’ve heard about her from people all over the world. (And in a STUNNING turn of my personal blogging standards that I set up after being bombarded with death threats on the douchebag I wrote about from Wife Swap, I have allowed all information possible to be published about her instead of removing it. I still don’t feel great about it but I also consider it evening the playing field a little.)

“She is definitely something else. She was my childhood friend, almost like family. So I thought I could trust her. She scammed me big time! Like six figures big time! Then she goes on and slams me on one of her blogs like I was the bad guy. Beware. She’s not much to look at but she can charm her way into anything. She also uses her kids to get the sympathy of others.”
“WOW…I just happened to do a Google search on Maria/Mia Szabo/Bautista/Bergman. She was a Myspace friend, then became a facebook twitter friend. I’ve been VERY loosely following her blogs, and all her switches to new domains…I personally never had an issue with her until 2 months ago. I was going to buy a purse from her, but either she changed the price or I got it wrong. Looooooooong story short, I’m trying to get my money back. She comes up with excuses after excuses.
I wish i had done my research ahead of time, but I never thought I would have to.”“I actually dated Mia Szabo for about a year. It was a long distance relationship..I live in Idaho she lives (or lived) in Las Vegas. I felt that I really knew this woman, so when she asked to borrow some money from me I loaned it to her. Well she refused to pay me back and now I’m stuck with a loss of over $2000….Lesson learned on my part. I wish I would have found your blog sooner than I did…I feel like a complete fool who was totally scammed.”
“Hello everyone! Yes I was one of her victims who fortunately got the money back,but mind u it’s not easy!!! Was given a bogus confirmation number for a wire transfer she allegedly sent. It was hard to send money coz she’s in Idaho for her Dads funeral,etc,etc. Now a friend of mine was told that her son is in the hospital, I hope none of you will hear that her son died!!! Who in her right mind use her kids to this evil doings!!! And yes,she will try accuse you of harassing her or saying libelous statement against her in an effort to get u off her tail. Count me in in any future litigation .”

And then there is the matter of her husband that she married after this whole mess started. Who actually seems like a decent guy. If he truly doesn’t know what she is? I feel huge for him as Mia apparently took to ripping off their mutual friends.

I am currently anon for reasons that will become clear eventually. I have a story to tell about this woman. I can’t wait to tell it but I have to wait. I wish with all my heart that none of you peeps had crossed paths with her. She is the most pathologically jacked up person I know and I feel for you all…

Yes, he is really her husband. Knowing them both fairly well, my gut instinct is that he has no idea how bad her pathology is. I find him to be a decent guy. Even if he found out though, he is dedicated like you wouldn’t believe to her two children and has really taken them on as his own. In a way, if he knew how messed up in the head she was, he probably would react very cautiously because he wouldn’t want to allow her to raise the kids on her own. The instinct would be stronger the more damaging he felt her influence to be. He is really going to be in a spot when he finds out what kind of monster he has dedicated his life to.
And then this last comment just this week:
I’ve read all the comments about Mia and I’m literally sick to my stomach. Like ‘Anon Mia Buster,’ I need to be careful about what I say, so as to still have a slight chance of recovering my money. Like most of her victims, she used the ‘designer handbag’ card on me – same story, she says the bags are from her EX. Not once did I ever think that she would dupe me. We’ve known each other for years, I know her ex-husband (Derek Bautista, father of her two kids), her cousins etc. I’m just totally mortified that I was stupid enough to believe her BS. When something seems too good to be true,it usually is.
So anyway, getting my money back just isn’t enough anymore. She will continue to scam other people, pay back debts, then steal again. All, most likely, to avoid jail time. It’s about time she’s prosecuted and her scamming is put to a stop.
I can’t help but wonder how long she’s been baiting me. For real, she even interviewed me for her ‘effin bogus blog one time, claiming that she has over 5,000 followers, yada yada. Then I come here and find out that not only is she stealing money from other people, she’s also stealing their words. Can a person get any lower than that? Apparently yes, if she has the audacity to fake her daughter’s death. What a friggin piece of work she is.
I think all of her victims need to unite and do what it takes to bring her to justice. It won’t be easy, but it seems collectively, we have a lot of evidence against her. I’m currently in contact with a former FBI agent (family friend) and he’s looking into her REAL whereabouts.

“She almost got me too! She posted pics of signature purses on FB that,according to her was given by her ex that she wants to get rid off so she’s selling it for a very low price. She first asked us to pay via paypal but she then said paypal put her account on hold since she can’t provide receipts for the said purses. So she asked us to deposit the payment directly to her husband Ben Bergman’s Bank of America account,which we did!!! Of course the purses didn’t make on the delivery date promised. So I demand my money back and after a week of stress,she sent me back the money in staggered basis. A fiend of a friend of mine was also scammed using the same purses for$5000 and never got her money back!!!”
THERE ARE SO MANY, MANY MORE LIKE THESE AND IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH.
Could I be wrong about all this and her?
Sure.
But when you look at the sheer NUMBER of emails from different ISP I’ve had about her, all outlining the same criminal behavior, stories, excuses, mode of operation?
I doubt I’m wrong.
I’m not trying to create drama here. Or traffic. Or be sensational. This woman has hurt people. A LOT of people. And for TWO-AND-A-HALF YEARS I’ve read and sat back and sympathized and mainly kept my mouth shut as emails and comments and stories came in. I thought it might go away. Die down. That she’d be caught or prosecuted. But seriously, this does NOT seem to be ending soon. I realize I am dredging this all up again and it may be a colossal headache for me but it’s gotten SO awful I refuse to be quiet.
So?
I’m looking for advice from people who deal with this. Not for me, but for the people that find me here looking for help.
What should happen?
Law peoples? Cops? Feds? ANYONE out there with advice about what these PILES OF PEOPLE can do about this one wretched women? Do you think they have any recourse or is she just going to waltz through life wearing shoes that were likely paid for by other people?
I full on expect Miss Mia @CheeksNMonkey to read all of this. Whenever she sets up a new place, people link it in the comments and it gets shut down or protected pretty quick.
I’ve done what I can. People are always welcome to email me. I’ll read and sympathize. You can comment here. I hope truly that you get justice.
As for Mia, I hope she sees the light one day and makes better choices. It seems like she has lovely kids and a possibly great guy for a husband. I really wish she would choose to take all that time and energy she is apparently using to allegedly scam and suck people dry and focus on being a good mother to her children, get a real job and do something good for the world instead of perpetually hurting the people that live in it.

Wow.bravo to you for putting this out there, you will very likely save someone from more pain and misery at her hands.
I would contact your local District Attorney ( or her’s). They or maybe the State Attorney Generals office would be a good place to start.
Dunno. It seems like everyone finds me and reads about her AFTER they have parted with their money and the long list of her excuses starts. It’s maddening to observe but I feel so terrible for all of them.
Surely this is some sort of cyber crime? Doesn’t the FBI have a cyber crime unit you can talk to about this?

Sorry. FBI cyber crime is pretty much a poser itself. There are daily $$$ minimums in losses that have to be reached before they’ll even turn on the coffee pot.

I reckon she doesn’t get prosecuted for the same reason that Nigerian money scams get away with it…people feel very silly when a google search might help them out. It’s tough to go to the cops when there really is probably no legal recourse when money was freely given with no enforceable contract.
On the plus side, there’ll be a reckoning eventually. Keep on doing what you do and try to help with what you can.

I don’t know Maria/Mia but I did know her dad very well. He passed away in December and is buried in Spokane Washington. But I do not know about her son. I do know that she scamed her poor father out of $18,000 a few years back and he took her to court but of course she did not show up so he got a judgment against her but again her moves around so much that he could not collect before he died.
I really wish I knew how to help – this woman needs to be stopped, well her and anyone else who targets good hearted, easily trusting people. I think they now have a unit that goes after internet crimes and they probably know of her… I hope they find her. And soon.

Wow, I never heard of her till I read this. I am appalled that nothing can be done. I am glad in some aspect that you got involved because you will educate the reading public. I hope she pays for the lies that she tells.
First impression: a dude impersonating a scammer chick. Some of those commenting claim to ‘know’ her, but still…
Second impression: jacked up bitch claims you’re jacked up? That’s rich. I’d be jacked up too if I knew someone like her was out wrecking lives, including my own.
Find where she lives, have your ‘stuff’ together in a neat package, and deliver it to the County Prosecutor where she lives. Unless she lives in UT, people you know can’t touch her.
Where’s she live, anyway? State? County? Inquiring minds and all that.
Remember also, there’s this guy we know…has this blog…who has friends who have friends…all across the country…some of whom might be in a position to help. Give him a shout and see if he knows anybody near to where this plague ridden wench exists. Might be there’s some good comes of it.

Oh she is very female alright. As mentioned in my last post, I can’t say much at this point due to an ongoing investigation. (Seriously, I want nothing more than to warn the whole world about this vile woman!) In the meantime though, let me just say this: Stay away from her. Like, FAR away. She is a scary, calculating woman.
I have reason to believe that she’s been impersonating her husband and kids online, so as to show people that she actually has a life, so they will trust her. I have reason to believe that she impersonates a lot of her “friends” online, as well. Through our research, we’ve also discovered her on a couple of ‘mail-order bride’ sites. Yes, there are a lot of people who use pictures of other people online, I know. It’s just too much of a coincidence though. The scammer being scammed. Highly doubt it. It’s her, preying on her next victim. (Probably some poor, defenseless old man with a large bank account)
I am a trusting person, perhaps that was my downfall, but it’s only because I always see the best in people, before focusing on the negative. Having been scammed by ‘Mia’ out of a large amount of cash, makes me angry. But to hear the stories of so many other innocent people who have unfortunately crossed her path as well, just literally makes me queasy.

I may be paid back tomorrow or even next year, but I just feel it’s my moral obligation to continue the fight for other people. If I can just stop ONE person from being scammed by her,it will make everything worth it.
What a disaster. I don’t understand how someone could do that (especially fake the death of her child. Really? That is as scummy as you can get).
I don’t have any ideas other than ones that have already been mentioned (contacting the state attorney where she lives) but I’m just so sad for all of these people she has scammed, and for you having your words stolen.
I am writing because today I was notified of this problem. I have “Known” Maria for almost two tears now. Nothing serious. We have tried to sell some gold and art as intermediaries. We never closed anything together. I was once offered ny her the Hawaii house for rent, but am over Hawaii and can’t afford it anyway. I have not had any problems with Maria (Lucky I guess, or I’m just too stubborn and cheap to give away my money), but she did offer to write that thing on her blog and post it for me . I thought that was nice. Anyway it is off now. I write this because my company name was mentioned above. I am not associated with nor have any dealings with Maria and haven’t for some time. Please do not associate me or my company.

Sucky sucky sucky – this whole situation is sucky. And I’m sorry you’re weirdly in the middle of it. Sadly I have no knowledge of anything useful, so have no good advice.
However, if you ever have a terrible crises involving translating Arabic or needing to know the lyrics to Broadway musical numbers, I’m here for you.
I was one of her victims. My husband went to high school with her & she friended us on facebook & we fell for the Hawaii scam. Wired her $300 in May and FINALLY got our money back on Jan 1 of this year. That was after countless text messages & emails with her. My husband saved all of his texts in case something does come of this someday. I would think this is wire fraud. We actually did file a report with our local police dept, but there is not much they could do. We didn’t even have an address that we were confident was really hers. She had been giving everyone (everyone else I found thanks to this blog!) different stories and different locations(NY, NJ, ID, CA, CO, just to name a few).
I always felt bad using your blog to get/give info, but that was just how it worked(I was leery of leaving my email out there for anyone to see). So, I am thankful for your blog, even though I found it too late. :-) I’m glad we were able to get our money back. But I worry that it might have been at the expense of someone else. I would LOVE to help stop her from doing this to anyone else. We have warned everyone we know that also knew her in high school. Although, she claims she now moved to Hong Kong to “start over”, so who knows….
WOW..a lot has happened since I was on here last.
She’s still going strong on her scams it seems. She never played the ‘dead kid’ card on me. she did however play a card saying she was stranded without a credit card with her kids, and Ben would not help out. I felt bad and wanted to wire her some money, but just didn’t have the means at the time to do so. This was before the handbag fiasco.
I think if you mention the FBI to her that lights a fire under her ass.
I too kept my texts from her. Per a lawyer buddy he suggested that take photos of the texts, since my cell ran out of memory to contain all her lies. I was saving them to a word doc, but he stated that would not hold up since it could be fabricated. You can’t really get the cell company to send the texts to you without a court order, even then I think they can only go so far back.
With so many people that she stole from, money wise and idea wise, we can band together and she’ll get steamrolled. I for one cannot wait for that day!
Hi … I’ve been checking Loralee’s blog religiously (Thanks Loralee, for letting us share our stories here!) … Dreading the day when yet ANOTHER person comes out with their similar experience involving that hideous woman! It seems she struck again with her scams.
I have MAJOR evidence against her. I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t think that their case alone will be investigated, but I’m positive that collectively … it will be hard to ignore.
I have been in contact with several of her victims already but I urge everyone who has been scammed by MARIA SZABO BAUTISTA BERGMAN, to email me with their stories. We will get justice.

I too want to thank you for your blog. She is really a piece of work. She victimizes anybody and everybody. In Vegas she would scam other people by befriending realtors and asking them if she can rent some of their homes then when they start collecting rent she makes all kinds of excuses until she can’t anymore then she’d pack up her kids and her things and move on to the next victim’s house without paying a cent. She also would go on dating sights and find victims there. This time preying on lonely men with big bank accounts or men looking for someone who will marry them so that they can get immigrant visas to the US. Then when she gets what she wants from them (money of course) she leaves them high and dry. But this was 4 years ago. It seems as if she has taken her scamming skills to another level.
Don’t feel stupid people. I lost so much sleep over what she did to me because I felt so STUPID (and of course there was the LARGE amount of cash gone). She’s good. She’s very good. She uses her charm and the sympathy we have for her children to get what she wants. I am so happy to hear that we are all getting together to make sure that she pays for what she has done to all her victims!
Mia, if you’re reading this “karma is a biatch” and you are about to get a taste of how much of a biatch she can be!

You are SO right. She has taken her scams to the next level. The mere fact that she’s duping people out of small amounts now, just shows how desperate she’s become (Or perhaps she’s just THAT demented, who knows).
Her world is getting smaller and smaller. Soon, she will have no bridges left to burn. Most of the people I’ve talked to, are understandably overcome by anger. For most, it’s not about the money anymore but about common decency. Something she obviously doesn’t possess.
I think it’s about time this woman gets what she deserves!

I cannot thank you ENOUGH for allowing us to use your blog and site to vent and organize. I have written a few times in response to all this, and with each additional entry, I grow more and more upset! I was turned on to your site by 5 or 6 different people who were all witnesses to my scamming by Mia (Maria). I am happy to help in any way I can…I have texts, emails, pictures, phone numbers, witnesses, names.
I was hard core scammed… monetarily ($1800), physically (drove her ass around for weeks when told she was in a car accident), mentally and emotionally (she created a fake friend who friended me on facebook and played with my head and heart). I met her kids!!!!!!!! I got a hotel room for her half sister when she came to visit, as well as when her husband came to see her before she moved to NY to be with him. I met her sisters kids when I was in Cali… I have kept everything ever associated with her and her family and businesses, and happy to share!!!! She still owes me money. She also owes me like 8 monthsw of my life I will never get back that I devoted to being her friend.
Wow. This just gets crazier by the minute.

It angers me SO much, because I’ve heard from people who have just been scammed like a few days ago. This girl obviously hasn’t learned her lesson, and I doubt she will … till she’s in handcuffs!

FYI, I just reached out to the person that introduced me to Maria and she also was scammed for $10K,. I don’t know the details of the circumstances, but I have forwarded her the gmail address. Also, Maria reached out to me asking for a statement saying I have been refunded in full. I am sure it is used to suck other people in. I was not willing to do that and told her I would not give the impression that we had an exchange that involved good business practices, when we did not.

well unfortunatley like the rest , I came across the blog site after I lost the money, so saw your response in there and figured I’d write you my story as well.
I’ve known Mia online only starting with myspace, then facebook for 6 years, actually was going to meet up with her in las vegas 5 years ago.
She was always nice with me through the years, I had heard a few stories about her, they seemed small ($100 for hand bag etc…) didn’t know if they were true or not, and I didn’t take notice, because she had never done anything to me.
So anyways I had a girlfriend in the philippines that got denied a k1 visa simply for admitting to using drugs 2 times 8 years ago. In the philippines thats a lifetime ban from ever entering the US. I reached out to any of my filippino friends that might know of anyone , or a good lawyer to talk to. 3 months later Maria called me and told me her ex-father in-law, has been able to help many of her family friends and relatives come over here, and she put me in contact with him.
She pretended to have nothing to do with him, and she deserves an Oscar for her acting, seriously. He was intelligent, articulate, and had all the right things to say . He knew all about immigration, and the different options we had. He said he had friends in the consulate, that could expunge her denial. He was my best friend and would answer every call. His terms were 4000 up front, and 4000 when she arrived. I knew there were a lot of red-flags, and it was a risk-reward proposition. I knew theres a good chance hes a scammer, but I had no other options to bring her here. So My risk was 4000, but my reward was the girl I loved being with me, so I went ahead and wired him the money. By the way his name is robert polloreno,
and he had me wire the money into someone elses account named van bich pho bank of america confirmation number: 026009593 381019350826
Once the money was sent , he never returned my calls, same excuses that I’ve read maria uses, his dad was dying, hes driving, he needed more info etc… delaying until March, and when march came he completely disappeared. However, I kept bugging Mia, and she always would respond right away, acting like she will help me get him, said she has his ssn in storage, and she will find it for me, and that she had referred some of her friends from the Philippines to him, and he has ripped them off as well.
She continues to text me as if shes going to help me up to even last night. So it looks like she has expanded her scamming efforts, by using others within her scam. Im sure they just split the money. You can tell shes always in trouble, her facebook page is constantly going from hiding her wall, for weeks at a time.
This type of scam has really insulated her from any consequences to be tied back to her, since all she did was introduce me to him, but sounds like she just has a little businesss of performing all kinds of scams. I would think one of the best ways to implicate her and him, would be to notify the IRS of monies sent to them, as you know they are not claiming this on the their taxes, For all the things Al Capone did, he was brought down for Tax evasion.
Anyways , thats my story, if anyone decides to do some type of class action suit against her/ or him , I would be very willing to co-operate in anyways that will help.

I STILL have the receipts from the money I wired her because she told me she was stranded in New York and needed cash. I had no clue she was a scammer…When I asked her to repay the loan, she told me she didn’t have to because I “GAVE” it to her. I told her it was a LOAN only and she became very threatening and told me she would see me in court….Please let me know if I can be a witness to her incarceration.
Michael, I remember when she texted me to about being stranded as well. This was BEFORE the handbag scheme. She was saying her and her kids were stuck without a place to stay, a car to drive, and cash to buy her kids a “burger”. I asked about Ben, she dismissed it pretty quickly saying they are not together. (Yet…a few months later he bought her daughter a car…) She’s losing track of her lies.
