I’ve mentioned before that I don’t think my legs are my best feature.
I’ve gone on record saying that I don’t wear skirts or dresses because of that fact.
(See reason above. Also add the fact that I HATE my legs touching with even MINUSCULE degrees of leg hair stubble.)
This past weekend I changed all of that. I was slated to speak at a blogging conference and since I have accepted a Twitter challenge to wear a dress to BlogHer in NYC in August, I thought it might be a good idea to test out the water to see how comfortable I am showing my gams before I’m around 3,000 of my peers.
So, my awesome friend Kim said we could go pick out some fabric that I liked and she would make me a couple of custom skirts to wear in Salt Lake this weekend.
And I did it.
I wore skirts.
I wore skirts that fell above my ankle.
In public.
I love how they turned out.
They are both beautiful and I like them for different reasons.
Mainly, I loved them because they made me feel pretty.
(And witty.)
(And gay.)
(But not Puerto Rican.)
(Which is a shame because if I WERE Puerto Rican I would look all loverly and tan and probably feel a lot less like “the unnactractive, non-glittery Cullen” when I expose my uber white limbs to the world.)
(Also, in further argument for wanting to be Puerto Rican, not being a member of The Cullen Clan would mean that I wouldn’t be subjected to having to watch Bella and Edward moon and oggle each other for eternity. So, I am totally down with that. )
(If you’re lost, you should really just rent West Side Story, dudes.)
(I can’t help you wrap your brain around my random tangents of weird, though.)
(You’re on your own delving into the bizarre tangle that is my mind.)
(Seriously, it’s like the bottom of a crochet basket where eleventyhundred kinds of yarn are all knotted and twisted up and there are random mismatched knitting needles stuck in here and there and bits of Dorito dust covering everything.)
(So good luck in there, people.)
(Although, if you’re not back in 2 hours, I WILL send a rescue team armed with chocolate. And possibly liquor.)
I think I am totally sold on wearing skirts. They are breezy and since I started waxing my legs and they feel smooth and silky most of the time, I don’t mind them at all.
LOVE them, in fact.
AND I THINK THEY ARE SO DANG CUTE!
The best thing about wearing skirts, though?
THIS:
AWESOME.
Now I just need some ruffle butt underwear to show off and I’m SET.
If you’d like more info on these skirts and how to have one made for you, go HERE.

See, I told you! Skirts are where it’s at, man.
LOVE IT!!
I need someone who makes me skirts like that! You look great!
Adorable. I can’t wear skirts cuz they do this strange riding-up thing and don’t sit where I want them to.
Dresses are my love though.
I love skirts. I wear them whenever possible. I really love the ones you are wearing!
You look absolutely gorgeous in that skirt! I haven’t worn one in 11 years since I quit my office job. I’d love to wear a dress or skirt to BlogHer NYC, but for me the problem is pantyhose. As in, I’d like to wear control top pantyhose to, you know, suck everything in, but does anyone wear pantyhose anymore? Would I look like a Grandma headed to bingo?
WOMAN!!! YOU MUST HAVE SPANX!!!!!!!!!!! OR YUMMY TUMMIES!!!!! SO many options that require no hose!
You totally rocked the skirts this weekend. Kim is the best.
And, yes, spinning is pretty darn awesome.
Giving up the tanning bed was ridiculously hard. But worth it because of the cancer and all that and my mother who constantly tells me they fry your ovaries. Scary, no?
But this time of year? It’s so stinkin’ hard to nor cave since I am so white I am damn near transparent.
I will admit that I have been going to a tanning bed AND I AM STILL UTTERLY LEG PALE!
I know, I know…skin cancer but this is the first tan I’ve had in like 20 years.
I saw the skirts in person and you looked great!!
These are so pretty. Kim is so talented!
I bet you pitied any girl who wasn’t you that night.
I seriously want to make you jewelry for that blue / orange combo…
I WILL NOT STOP YOU. ;P
Well, considering MY jewelry wardrobe and my inability to STOP MAKING IT, I need someone else to fixate on!
You must be a mama of boys — and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Because if you had a girl, you would already have been reminded of the heady delight of “twirly skirts,” and you might have taken the plunge sooner. For those of use who sew a lot for our own daughters and are now inspired to do the same for ourselves: any chance of a photo of the top of the brown skirt, to see how the fullness is achieved? (I have ZERO interest in scooping Kim and her etsy shop, I swear; I just have a piece of eyelet and some ribbon I’ve been dying to make up for myself, and now I want what you have. :) *twirls in anticipation* You look great!
Email me and I will share my secrets with you Mama ;)
shite – you look awesome.
kim made those?! you looked so awesome in them! i happen to love skirts (not the way i look in them, but the idea of them), so i just thought you looked cute, i had no opinions whatsoever about your legs.
and guess what? i’m puerto rican.
You could be Martian and I would still look at you and go HOLY COW THAT IS ONE OF THE PRETTIEST PEOPLE I HAVE EVER SEEN.
Seriously. It was intimidating. But so glad I got up the nerve to say HELLO! xo
I am right there with you, Alexis is GORGEOUS!!! I sat next to her during the depression panel and felt utterly fugly. ;)
xoxoxo
Awesome! Twirling is the best. ;)
You looked darling all weekend in your Prairie Mama skirts! Way to go Kim!
Great to see you again!
kami aka Charlotte ;)
LOL! I will probably tell you that every freaking time I see you. (Can I look like you? Please?)
Oh so cute! Skirts are so fun and you look like you’re having a blast in them!
Yes, you definitely need some ruffle butt underwear! Don’t forget, you’re teaching Twirl 101 the next time we’re in the same room together. I have a twirl skirt on my wish list for my birthday in September. Perhaps a twirl-a-thon is in order?!?! You rock the skirt, babe (and the tangent). You need to do both more often. ;)
I will twirl with you ANY TIME, BABY!
I am in love with your skirts. I’d steal them, but they’d only fit my boobs. (I’ve got the big-girls-with-bellies-can’t-wear-skirts hangup…)
You look great!
They DO look fine! However the only “skirt” you will ever see me wear has the name Breckenfilly- or Scottish Kilt! I dare not shave my legs for that,I tell you! And I’m not going near the underwear discussion…
Love it! A skirt you can twirl makes you feel like a little girl again.
Those are some awesome skirts! I hope you find some ruffled undies…then we can call you ruffle-butt! (In a loving and totally not-judgmental way, of course!)
My 5 year old was sitting next to me as I was reading this post and she asked “who that teenager was?” How is that for a compliment?
You look great!
Definetly need ruffle butt undies! Just in case you decide to to the can-can dance at your blogher conference.
On you they look awesome – but I don’t think I’m going to have any made for me. However. My ancestors wore skirts. Kilts actually. I might wear a kilt. For that ‘breezy’ effect. But I would never twirl. Unless, of course, I had some ruffle butt underwear I wanted to show off.
But then, if you’re gonna wear a kilt, you’ve GOT to do it right.
No twirling.
Oh so pretty!!! I love both skirts and you look great!!
Look at your bad fluttery self!
You look beautiful in skirts and you should wear them more – you can’t spin in pants and that is one of the best things about being a girl.
As I read your “I feel pretty” I broke out in song (only in my head mind you) before you even went to the next line.
gorgeous pics
My thoughts, reading this post:
* I love those skirts!
* I love how those skirts go with your hair!
* I want your hair!
* I want those skirts!
* I can’t get those skirts because they’re custom made.
* But wait, I CAN get those skirts because she included a link!
* Oh yay, it’s a link to Prairie Mama!
* Oh, the price. Definitely reasonable, but…
* I am poor.
* I can’t get those skirts.
I have a birthday coming, though, so I’m going to slyly keep the page open at night when I’m with my husband, look over at it and sigh periodically…And if that doesn’t work, I can still at least pick up a box of Clairol.
Absolutely gorgeous! Oh, and the skirts are pretty too. :)
HUGE West Side Story fan here. One Hand, One Heart was the special music during our wedding ceremony.
What a great friend you have to make you such awesome skirts. Love them!
They are super cute skirts and you are adorible in them! We must think alike though because I understood all of your ramblings! I tell my husband all the time that I can’t tell him what I’m thinking because he’d get lost. When I attempt to tell him what I’m thinking he bangs his head and whines that it hurts him when I talk. :)
Okay…so…I have really shitty legs, but…I LOVE wearing skirts! I’m not sure if you remember my nickname in Jr. High and HS was ‘albino,’ Aaron LOVES my white skin, so it’s not an issue anymore, I wear skirts ALL. THE. TIME.
Those skirts are BEYOND cute!
Oh, and one more thing, seriously. HOW COME YOUR ARMS LOOK SO FANTASTIC? I need to know your secret. My arms are bigger around than my waist. Seriously, I think I’m going to get work done.
you look great!
me in skirts? not-so-much. my bubble boot-ah becomes a shelf for all to settle their drinks on.
I think if you feel good wearing skirts, it makes you look good. And from your pix, I can tell you feel great=looking great!
friggin GORGEOUS.
Ha! You PROMISED me you’d wear a dress to BlogHer and now here you are, starting early.
You’re as pretty as ever, friend.
You look fabulous! And I’m always down with twirling.
Those are cute. BTW- I hate my legs as well. White, black stubble that never shaves off, freckles, cankles, spider veins and ugly monkey toes. Anyway, I lovelovelove maxi dresses. Covers my legs AND I feel pretty. There is nothing better than finding a dress or skirt and then feeling pretty in it.
Kim seriously outdid herself. They are freaking amazing. And you look beautiful!
Those skirts are fabulous. Must. Have. One.
I think I need to start sewing all that fabric I have collected for ‘someday’ when I know what I want to make.
You are such an inspiration! :D
Loving the last skirt especially.
Seriously, only thin waisted people can get away with those skirts! But they are absolutely adorable on you. Cute sandals would be great with those outfits!
Super cute! I love fun skirts and need to shave my legs more so I can wear them!
I love skirts. I live in them. And dresses. I hardly ever wear pants (well, underpants I do). Those skirts are cute. Embrace them and the twirl!
P.S. If you were Puerto Rican you’d be much shorter.
You do look nice in those, but your legs are really white. My wife’s the same way, now uses one of those tanning creams to at least get some color on.
Seriously. That lovely Kim makes some lovely skirts. Way to go, lady-so glad I got to see you wear them well :)
You were rocking those skirts, girlfriend. You were OWNING those skirts.
You looked witty, and pretty. And totally heterosexual. But in a hot way.
