A Meeting of Bloggers

November 16, 2009

Today’s post is courtesy of Jill, who authors the fabulous blog, Scary Mommy.  She’s grand, people. I was totally a brazen asshat brave and asked if she would mind coordinating my 35th birthday party while I was in Washington DC since I was drowning in so many details I had gray matter oozing out of my nose.

It was LOVELY. Everyone was so kind and some people drove long ways to get there and I just couldn’t NOT post about something so cool. I have a lot going on this week and this guest post really helps me out. (Besides, how cool is it that you can whip an intro on a Saturday night, send it to someone and let them publish it later in the week? It’s like making a casserole ahead of time only WAY less fattening.)

Besides, I think that the night would be better told from Jill’s point of view.

Ya know…in case you are curious what it’s like meeting me.

‘Cause I am super important n’ stuff**

What can I say about meeting Loralee?

Hers was one of the first blogs I started following, so I was thrilled when I saw her familiar face in the crowd. It’s always wonderful when you feel an in-person connection with people you know just through a computer screen, and Loralee is every bit as magnetic and full of life as you would hope. Meeting her was a highlight of the night.

Or, at least it was to me, way back in July at Blogher. Apparently, though, I didn’t make much of an impression because she seemed to think we met for the first time at her birthday dinner last week.

{Whoops.}

Leading up to the dinner I was torn between playing dumb and never acknowledging our previous meeting or calling her out on it. If I played dumb, what if she suddenly remembered? But, I didn’t want to make her feel badly telling her we’d met. It was more funny than anything, and given the blur that isBlogher, totally understandable. Oh, the decision I had to make.

The moment I saw her, I fessed up. Loralee is one of those people who makes you just open up and I simply had no choice. Turns out another dinner guest, Sarah, had met Loralee before but had no recollection. And I couldn’t remember any of the other guests’ names despite having corresponded with them for weeks.

{Whoops.}

(Loralee here. Dude. I am such a dork. And I was on huge amounts of painkillers at BlogHer. If it helps I also TOTALLY DIDN’T RECOGNIZE SWEETNEY AT BLOGHER, EITHER. THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE PERSON, UM, EVER. AND WHO IS ALSO A FRIEND. AND THAT PRETTY MUCH SAVED MY BLOGGING LIFE LAST YEAR. AND I ASKED HER HER NAME! AND THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL HER, “DUDE! YOU ARE SOOOOO TINY THIS YEAR!” I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE SAID, “HEY! YOU WERE TOTALLY JABBA THE HUTESQUE AT BLOGHER ‘08!!!  AND…Yay. I am a winner. AND my reaction to finding out my embarrassing faux pas with Jill? “DID I MENTION THE DRUGS???!!! Seriously, everyone wants to be me. Heh.)

Apparently, this is an occupational hazard to being a blogger. The computer just seems to gobble up those brain cells and erase those very important details. At least we’re all in it together and understand. It’s those non-bloggers you need to worry about offending!

Loralee, it was just fabulous meeting you. Both times…

ll

And your readers/family? Pure awesomeness. Sue from Laundry for Six, who clearly knows you best of all, actually bring a can of Diet Coke, Sarah from the Goon Squad, with the gorgeous voice, the hilarious Kristin from Mommy Needs a Cocktail, the very gifted Laurie from Laurie Writes, the insanely talented Erin from Grad School Knitter, and Supa Dupa Fresh, from Fresh Widow, my soon-to-be new neighbor. I hope.

It was a pleasure to meet you all. I hope to see you again, soon…  Maybe we’ll even remember each other’s names. :)

**(For that one weenie in the back who always takes everything said online WAY too seriously? I was KIDDING.)

Stumble it!

I’m CRACKING UP RIGHT NOW. Loralee knows why. Or maybe she doesn’t. You never can tell with her. (she did the same-ish thing to me, Jill!)

That dinner sounds awesome. I’d love to get the two of you together in a dimly lit room…

    xoxo to you both!

Dude. I was totally there that night and you said nothing to me. Ha – just joking. I wished I could be there, but alas, I live in Bum-Farkle Egypt, Oklahoma which is nowhere near DC. :(

I’m so glad you had a grand time, and thanks to Jill for writing about the evening for us! :)

I’m wondering if we shouldn’t require that bloggers wear their mastheads and avatars pinned to their shirts when meeting in public. Yes, we will look like dorks, but we will be dorks who remember each other.

  • DUDE!!!! I am SO sad I missed the party! What with me being on the opposite side of the continent and all, I guess I had no choice. But I sure wish I had been with you all!

And OOOOOHHHHH I SOOOOOOOOOO do that too about introducing myself to people I know! I did that with my husband – well before we were married. But hey – it all worked out okay in the end. I married him, gave him two kids – I think he has forgiven me. ;)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LORALEE!!! And way to go Jill for throwing such a beautiful, bloggy party! :)

Ummm I just want you to know scary mommy that I tried to tell loralee that she had met you at Blogher and she didn’t believe me. TOO FUNNY!

I am so glad you all had a blast. Meeting Loralee the first time for me was like Christmas morning. She is the BEST!

    I love you woman!

  • sweetney says:

You were adorable and sweet and funny and next time? You’re going to share some of those pain killers, lady. xoxo

  • Alison says:

Sounds like it was a great time, with lots to chuckle at to break the ice!

  • Laurie says:

I had a great time – and getting to know your sister, Loralee, was a highlight. Loving that photo of me with her and your brother-in-law in the post.

I’m so glad you had such a great trip and we could spend some time with you on your birthday (and get you and Sarah to sing. :))

Thanks, Jill, for putting this all together.

  • Glad you had a great birthday! I have yet to meet some fellow bloggers. I think it would be so exciting…yet kinda nerve wracking too. And I am one of those people who NEVER remembers people’s names, so don’t feel bad, lolol!! Worked at a school for 3 flippin’ years and STILL don’t remember everyone’s name because I’m so lame. Arg!

  • Lena says:

Sounds like you guys throw a wicked party. Maybe there will be one close to the Rockies next year?

  • avasmommy says:

I would flat out hyperventilate if I ever got to meet Lorlee in person. She’s a rock star!

  • We met at BlogHer, too, but I was very quiet and in awe. So I didn’t say much. LOL.

I love Jill, too, but I didn’t meet her :( Boo! I’ll have to budget in travel plans to crash your party next year.

  • PrincessJenn says:

Sounds like you had an awesome time. What an amazing group of ladies to have all in one place.

  • Kristen McD says:

That looks like a fantastic party!

  • Ah someday I’ll get to meet some of you in person. And like at a HS reunion, I’ll recognize some faces but have no clue who you Are. I do like the Avatar pin idea!
    Thanks for the post Jill!

  • Adelas says:

I have been in lots of situations where I was afraid I wasn’t going to recognize someone (like when I hadn’t seen them in a long time)… I always get THISCLOSE to jumping the gun – I see someone that looks vaguely like them and think “hm, is that them? i didn’t think so but it probably is… i should go over and say hi… crap, IS that them?!! IS IT!?!” but luckily I always wait, and then I end up seeing the actual person and being SURE and then freaking out that I actually thought that other person might have been them and what a close call it was.

I would probably totally do that with Sweetney & HerBadMother. And then be branded a loser for the rest of my bloggy little life. BlogHer ‘10… will I be paranoid about whether I look fashionable? Not really, since I know I don’t. Paranoid about whether I confuse one person for another or completely fail to recognize someone I ADORE? Already am. And I don’t even have tickets yet.

  • It was such a great evening! It was an absolute pleasure to meet you and Jonathan and celebrate your birthday with you!

Now I’m totally wondering if you will remember me at BlogHer this summer… I’ll keep a Diet Coke in my purse! :-P

Thanks again, Jill, for planning such a great night out!

  • Connie says:

Fun! I love meeting up with Loralee. All of my funniest times since moving to Utah have included her.
