One of my favorite things came to an end today.
I have been reading the Canadian comic strip, For Better or Worse, since I was about 8 and today was the last strip.
It is the only “Real time” comic strip out there, I believe. Lynn Johnson is amazing. She started the strip with the main characters, Ellie and John as the parents of a toddler and a newborn and she ends it with them on the verge of retirement and eldest daughter getting married.
The way she has aged her characters is AMAZING.
I’m the same age as the eldest son, Michael and so it has been interesting following his life and that of his kid sisters. They have graduated from school, chosen career paths, had families, some have died (when the family dog, Farley, passed away I actually cried), and I’ve been happy and sad right along with them.
I’ve had a lovely time following The Patterson family and I will miss reading them daily.

I couldn’t believe it when I read that in the paper this morning!!
I have loved reading them for as long as I can remember.
*sigh*
It will be fascinating to see where she goes from here.

I love the way she wrapped everything up. You’re not wondering what happens next. I also admired her for showing us all sides of the family – not just the happy ones. It was real life. The Pattersons have become friends I check in with regularly and I will miss them.

I should totally not be crying about this, right?
This was the ONLY comic I ever read on Sundays because I don’t care for comics usually. This one just captivated me.
I’m all sad now. I guess it had to happen eventually. I hope they start reprinting the a la Peanuts.

OMG, me too! I though I was the only one who still read that strip (I have it on my Yahoo homepage so I could check it every day). I can’t believe it’s over.
(didn’t Elizabeth look beautiful at her wedding??)
(and wasn’t it creepy reading what “happens” to everyone else in today’s strip?)

I actually gasped when I read the strip today and saw it was the last one. I knew she was planning on retiring but didn’t know when. Loved it.

I LOVE that comic strip! I have a couple books of it. It’s probably my favorite. Sorry about the end of the era, I’ll miss them too!

Am I a nerd if I’m crying about this? I’ve followed this strip since the beginning. I’m thrilled to see that she’s starting a new saga tomorrow though!
I loved her take on family life.

Hey, I remember that strip! I used to read it as well.
It sounds like she’s a mommycomicstripper (bad term, I suppose) and now she’s moving into something else. Brava!

I’ve read it only once in a while, but the announcement of the last strip brought a tear to my eye. For me it was the real-time aging thing as well – from time to time when I would read, the characters were all looking older. A great piece of Canadiana, now retired.
