Sideblog: The end of an era

One of my favorite things came to an end today.

I have been reading the Canadian comic strip, For Better or Worse, since I was about 8 and today was the last strip.

It is the only “Real time” comic strip out there, I believe. Lynn Johnson is amazing. She started the strip with the main characters, Ellie and John as the parents of a toddler and a newborn and she ends it with them on the verge of retirement and eldest daughter getting married.

The way she has aged her characters is AMAZING.

I’m the same age as the eldest son, Michael and so it has been interesting following his life and that of his kid sisters.  They have graduated from school, chosen career paths, had families, some have died (when the family dog, Farley, passed away I actually cried), and I’ve been happy and sad right along with them.

I’ve had a lovely time following The Patterson family and I will miss reading them daily.

I’m not sure this is the best way to deal with my disappointment…

Sideblog:Brideshead Revisited

Summation of Brideshead Revisited: a very pretty, very British, very well-acted, very LONG-ASS movie.

First of all, the book is not what could be labeled as a jolly time, and this film is very true to the book, so don’t go to this movie expecting giggles and kicks. It has a very heavy-handed religious and homosexual themes and the tone is rather desperate.

I felt fairly bleak and kind of like I wanted to take a shower after it was over.

I can’t say that I recommend it, simply because I prefer movies that provide a little more redemption SOMEWHERE in the film. However, when all is said and done, it is very well done and if you loved the book you’ll enjoy it.
