Sideblog: My take on Mamma Mia

July 30, 2008

My summation of Mamma Mia in three words: HOT TRANNY MESS.

Some moments were great but over all?

Shudder.

Good on stage, crapola on the screen.

However, I was there with two of the best women on the planet (Waving madly to Karen and Chelle) so it was one of the best nights I’ve had in awhile. When we were shrieking in embarrassment and/or horror in the parking lot a group of women mistook us for thinking it was fabulous and squeed, “We’ve seen it three times!”

Um, I would die, thanks.

(Apologies to those who loved it, but watching a woman use silk flower arrangements as a male package just isn’t my thing. Speaking of, what was with all the crotch grabbing? And memo to Pierce Brosnan: DO NOT QUIT YOUR DAY JOB, BUT PLEASE STOP SINGING. GO BACK TO BEING HOT IN A TUXEDO FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY!!!!)

That is all.

(Well, not really. I could go on for years but this IS a tiny sidebar.)

Stumble it!

Darn. I haven’t seen it, but was looking forward to it. Sad to hear it was a let-down. Thanks for the review though!

ok…i must admit i loved this movie. i think there are several reasons for this.
    1. i am all the freak over in turkey and it reminded me of home. (which makes absolutely no sense since abba wasn’t an american band and the island was a greek island, but it did.)
    2. the covered ladies…the ones with the headscarves singing abba songs thrilled me to no end. many of those women looked turkish, and they would never in a million years do that so the actual picture of them singing and jumping into the water fully clothed was hysterical.
    3. i grew up on abba which just made me smile.
    4. i agree…pierce brosnan can’t sing!
    5. there were only 8 other people in the theater…all of them turkish…so i loved that the movie was in english and subtitled so we laughed at the funny parts and they just looked at the movie and wondered what was so funny. for some reason this thrilled me!

    ok…that’s all.

Gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. Loved this movie. I love pretty much all muscials and this one was not an exception.

I thought it was a happy movie and really made me smile. I thought it looked like they had a ton of fun making it as well.

I agree with you about Pierce, though.

I’ve seen the movie twice and plan on taking my daughter to see it as well.

Oh, there were some GREAT moments in it. The scenery and the authentic greek-looking chorus were awesome. I LOVED Collin Firth (except I just didn’t buy him as gay. But his Headbanger costume was AWESOME) and the lead girl was very cute. Plus, that scene “Slipping through my fingers?” ADORABLE.

AND I LOVE ABBA WITH THE POWER OF A THOUSAND BURNING SUNS. (Seriously? SERIOUSLY.)

So, I was uber excited to see the movie and it was…well…It suffered (IMO) from what a lot of musicals do when they are on the screen: It’s too much. Too much writhing in sexiness, too many times that they “Oops! Fell into the ocean” too much of the same types of physical humor, it just was too much for the screen. (I love it on stage though. Truly. I danced in the freaking aisles.)

That and I really think that the choreography that was supposed to make women look super hot and appealing HAD to have been done by a 57-year-old gay man. (My friend came up with that but doood. Had to agree with her. I’m just sayin’…)

I too disagree. But I went with the thought in mind that it was going to be a schmaltzy musical. I was not disappointed. Pierce took off his shirt to a collective gag among us. But, Daughter and I decided that when we needed a good laugh (or for sappy mother, Slipping Through My Fingers) a good cry we would purchase it when it comes to DVD.For us, it was worth the free passes.
But shaking the image of Pierce Brosnan singing and shirtless…..eeeeewwwww. I might need therapy.

Even though there were some unfortunate moments on the screen, I don’t regret seeing the movie. I, too, adored the “greek chorus” (and thought it was the one smart thing in the movie), most of it was oodles of fun, and loved singing the ABBA songs. Many of the songs should have been halved in duration, and I may never recover from some of Pierce’s more painful moments (anyone sitting within four rows of us is probably aware of my thoughts on his chest, I just couldn’t stop the noise that escaped me).

  • My first reaction to this being on the big screen was “ick.” Then I saw the preview and I was like, “wow! What a cast! I must see!” And then I read your post and though, “Yes, my initial reaction was right.” But, now after reading the comments, I’m back on the fence. Maybe I’ll just wait until it’s on Netflix…

Like my friend Chelle said, I don’t regret going, I really don’t. Perhaps if the median age of everyone in the theater wasn’t 70, I would have a better time, I dunno.

I did have a good time with my friends and really, if you want to go see it, please do. These are just my opinions. Some people loved every minute of it. And I enjoyed several minutes, so it’s not a total loss.

(I still stand by Hot Tranny Mess. It totally fit for me.)

Shit, shit, shit. Sorry for the swearing, but I was EXTREMELY disappointed with Mamma Mia. I loved “Dancing Queen,” but that was about it. Meryl Streep, who is always excellent, so was poorly cast in this role it was amazing. She looked utterly ridiculous, especially when she was rolling around on the roof. Ugh.

  • I thought the cheesy-ness was great. kinda like rocky horror picture show, its so bad that its good. However, I’m with you on the PB singing, my friend Sara (the one you met) and I cringed every time he sang!

I do hear you on the “It’s so bad it’s good” thing. Kind of like Mystery Science 3000.

  • My sister went to see it a couple weeks ago and said she couldn’t understand why people were saying Meryl could sing, said it was horrible.

  • I agree with you 99% in your assessment of this movie. I say 99% because I am sure there is at least one thing we would disagree on if we discussed it more in-depth, but basically I agree with everything you said. I actually got up and WENT TO THE BATHROOM during one of Pierce Brosnan’s songs so I wouldn’t have to sit there writhing in embarrassment for the poor man.

I thought Meryl Streep was going waaaay over the top in much of the movie with her acting choices, but man that woman has some pipes. Most of the cast did a great job with the singing, and it looked like they were all having a fantastic time. But overall…meh.
