Have I mentioned that moving sucks big, hairy, donkey balls?

It really does. Just in case you were wondering.

I AM starting to see the light of day.

I won’t have cable or internet until Wednesday, so I am taking a few moments while I can to say, “Hi!” and “I’m not dead (yet!)”. After lifting eleventyhundred boxes, I feel like I need a spine transplant. I have cried, argued and dropped things on my foot more times than I can count at this point, so I feel like I am probably being overly negative about things. I DO think that I will love where we are, I am just feeling overwhelmed.

When I get to this point I usually have my friend, Chelle’s voice in my head saying something like, “Let’s make a list of the positives and the negatives, because I bet that the positives will come out ahead” (or some other equally wise and inspiring statement.)

So…Here are some of the good points of the move:

  • This place is brand spankin’ new. I love the color scheme and and the layout.
  • SPACE. Like, 650 sq ft. more than I am used to. Plus, it is much better designed space.
  • An over sized double garage. (This would beat having NO garage any day of the week.)
  • The boys each have their own room. They LOVE them. Watching them and their excitement has been by FAR the best thing about this move. They have been beyond adorable with moving their things around and making their own little spaces. I am really hoping that this eliminates some of the problems we have been having with them lately.
  • There are more kids around for my boys to play with.
  • The bedrooms are spacious.
  • My master bath and closet make me very, very happy.
  • The dining area is big enough to have a 6 ft table and walk around it.
  • I have a central vacuum.
  • THREE bathrooms. (This would also beat out having one ANY DAY of the week.)
  • No yard to maintain.
  • We were on well water at our other house. While it was free and tasted great, OMG, I hadn’t realized how much SOFTER MY SKIN WOULD FEEL using city water. Le sigh…
  • I have a lot of counter space in my kitchen.

And then we have the drawbacks:

  • WE CANNOT BRING WILBUR. Jon told me that they could keep her at the house, but some of the employees have allergies. I have no idea WHAT we’re going to do. I don’t want to give her away and I don’t want to put her in the non-destructive shelter. But, I am terrified of her being a purely outdoor cat. It gets really cold here in the winter.
  • The door knob to the downstairs bathroom fell off.
  • Jonathan snapped a segment of floor molding that was not glued down properly.
  • We didn’t have enough time/energy to properly go through and sort everything so I have a LOT of boxes out in my GARAGE (Yay!) that are glaring at me and demanding to be sorted.
  • We already have some dings in the walls.
  • The laundry room is more like a laundry closet. It’s still better than what I had, but the folding doors block the dryer door so that I can’t open it all the way. It would drive me NUTSO but I don’t want to take the doors off. Jonathan thinks that he has a solution so I think I’ll be ok.
  • I am not sure how I like stairs in my house.
  • The heating and cooling seem a bit wanky. It always seems too hot or too cold. I don’t know if this is just because I have to play with the heating unit some more or what.
  • There is no double sink in the master bedroom.
  • While I love the walk-in-closet, I already know that the one we build needs to be larger and designed differently.
  • I wake up at the crack of dawn by neighbors opening their garage doors. I really hope I get used to it.
  • The waterpipes are FREAKING NOISY.
  • There is no pantry and not quite enough cupboard space in my kitchen.

Over all, I don’t really look at the minuses as minuses, though. I figure that each “Drawback” turns into a bit of a plus because I’m learning what I DON’T want to have happen when we build.

In the end it looks like the pluses are much more important, so it’s all good.

Off to unpack eleventyhundred MORE boxes…

New houses are cool. I spent my Friday touring the parade of homes in Happy Valley, and I have to say I’m envious of all the cool things houses have these days. I net your house is sweet too, although I have one question: Should the master bedroom have a sink?

Moving does suck! I think it takes awhile to get used to anything new. Before long, you probably won’t even notice most of your minuses! Hope you get settled in quickly.

It is good to be in a house and know what you will do differently when you build. I’ve moved (only) three times, and we own what we are in now, but it is good to see what works and doesn’t. Maybe you could put an elevator in instead of stairs :)

I’m with ya! We are moving into our new house on Wednesday, after weeks of wrangling with our buyers and I can’t wait to get there, but I could really do without the whole moving part of it. Packing sucks! Unpacking? Ugh! I don’t even want to think about it!

    Good luck getting settled in.

p.s. Why do you have employees at your house?

That totally sucks that you can’t bring Wilbur. Can’t you pay a bit extra for a pet? Most places allow you if you put down a deposit.

Much luck sorting and unpacking, that is my least favorite part about moving!

All those pluses sound GREAT. :) I’m excited for your boys having their own rooms. I still remember how excited I was when I found out I didn’t have to share a room with my brother any more.

I agree with you that the minuses will help you figure out what not to do in the house you are building so still not so bad. Yay!

I can’t wait till your internet is all set up. Hopefully it won’t be to hard for you. I know I go a little stir crazy when my internet isn’t working.

Congratulations on surviving “The First Test of Moving Manhood”! I now have an incredibly vivid image that’s going to take industrial strength brain bleach to remove. Good luck with all those boxes!

The cat situation alone would turn me into a complete basket case, so at least you’re holding it together better than I would. Good luck dealing with the “minuses,” and have fun with your new place!

I was just wondering if you got trapped under some boxes…

definitely looking at the minuses as ways to do things differently as you build is the way to go! There are a number of things we would have done differently that we didn’t realize until after our house was built.

You do get used to noises, believe me. Our apartment is right next to the trax line on 500 S. and the street noise is quite loud. Furthermore, our water heater makes a strange popping sound every so often that sounds like someone is in the house. I noticed these a lot when I first moved in, but now I hardly hear them at all. People who visit often remark about the strange popping noises or the loud street traffic, and we’re like, oh you can hear that?

I’d sneak Wilbur in. No one really has to know, do they? I couldn’t get rid of my kitties. I just couldn’t do it. Yeah. Sneak her in. That’s the ticket.
After all, she is one of the family. I vote sneaky. I’ve done it before with THREE. No one knew and BESIDES you pay a deposit for the “just in case kind of stuff.” So. There you have it. Sneak, sneak, sneak.

Please post pictures of the new digs soon! I love seeing where people live. Or, maybe you could do a video tour–a la “House Hunters”!

Make the boys share a bathroom, then give Wilbur the third bathroom for her “room.”

Just think – if you have to store some of your less-used kitchen gadgetry in boxes (in your ginormous garage), then that is less for you and your boys to wash!

Lastly – just in case you didn’t count up points and stuff – the lists don’t even compare. Nothing compares to 3 bathrooms instead of 1 and a huge garage instead of none! NOTHING!!!

You are just in the midst of move-in suck, which I am not downplaying – it is gruesome. It will end, however, and you will still have 3 bathrooms and a big garage. Yay!

If it were me, I’d sneak Wilbur in, as long as you know there won’t be any damage. No one has to be the wiser…normally I’m totally against being sneaky and/or lying, but in this case I think it’s the better option.

I thought about sneaking her in, I really did, but DUDE…the contract is basically “Any trace of any pet at any time and you will be out on your ear in 24 hours, no ifs ands or buts.”

It sucks, but after talking to our vet and other people, I think Wilbur will be ok. We’re getting her an insulated doggie house to go on the porch of our old house and the kids are going to go over to visit her every day after school. We’ll definitely take her to the new house, though. :)
