Hairstyles:The good, the bad, and the fugly…

May 21, 2008

I love changing my hair. I do it frequently and have had an awful lot of changes over the years, including a really unfortunate habit of using bottles of “Sun In’ combined with spiral perms in Jr. High. At least then I had the excuse of age. I was 24 when I made the hideous decision to execute a blond pixie cut inspired by a late night viewing of Sliding Doors. NOT a good idea. I only have one photo of it and it is microscopic. Sorry!)

I could tell a story behind each of these photos, but I’m already subjecting you to 30 years of hair and I figure that is enough punishment for anyone. (Huge apologies to my male readers. I know this must be TOTALLY fascinating to you all. Right up there with sitting on a chair waiting for your spouse to to try on a plethora of outfits, huh?

Since there are eleventyhundred photos in this post, I’m going to take advantage of that spiffy “More” option that Wordpress has. Sorry some of them are so tiny. I lost most of my early photos and so I didn’t have a lot to choose from..

So…What hair styles have you liked? Hated? Executed in moments of stupidity?

I am currently sporting a hairdo that is more like a hair don’t. But I have had a number of different hairstyles over the years, too, so I know it’s only a matter of time before it grows out into something I can work with.

I tried the pixie cut once too. Not a good idea when you have a head as big as mine!

not long after moving to turkey i went into a kuafor/salon and asked in turkish to have 3 centimeters of hair cut off. unfortunately i must have said leave only 3 centimeters on because that is what happened. i called my husband on the way home to warn him that we now sported the same look and he just replied, “come on home, larry.” i was known as larry for a long time after that. and i didn’t get my haircut for 10 months. and then only because we were in america for a visit!

I look soooooo hideous in short hair. I don’t have the bone structure for it and my features are way too prominent.

I’m still trying to mentally recover from a disastrous butch that happened about Feb 2007. Took me until August to grow it out to really short, so yeah, it was really freaking short before that. I felt like a weird boy. I’ve always loved short funky cuts, but this one seriously gave me the urge to grow my hair long for the first time since 6th grade!

Even though my hair is much longer now than it was then, I still haven’t felt comfortable putting any updated photos of me out for the www to see. Maybe I’ll change that sometime soon.

I love how adventurous you are. I get in hair funks all the time, want to change, but then freak out when it comes time to actually cut it. And I feel ya on the short hair thing, I think it would be nice to have a shorter style for the summer but I know it just wouldn’t work with my features.

I am a firm believer of changing colour and styles frequently. And I do things radically. As my dear old mom (who was gray from the day I was born…I am sure this was a sign of her life to come) used to say…”It’s hair. It’ll grow back and if you can’t stand it…buy a damned wig”.

LOVE the one with bangs—you’re in a white shirt. Bangs are fantastic with your face!!

And the darker the red the better.

But, you need to wear a sepia-toned wild-wild-west get-up each day. Because I’m pretty sure that was the most awesome look of the bunch. And don’t forget your ceramic jug :)

Being a hairstylist, I have to comment. I think you have got it right. Your current hair is fabulous! I love it when it is blown out strait and all shiny! And red. I agree with you, your hair looks better long. I am envious.

Hair, Shmair!!! I say, hair is made to be played with! I love your hair every length, and color! (Ok, maybe not the orangy high school hair.) Heck, it grows back, so why not play around with it! I colored my hair 4 times this last weekend! Yep- finally settled on a light red with blond highlights.

However, one more thing, I am also very split-personality about hair. When it’s long, I want it short, and vice-versa. So, maybe you shouldn’t take my word for it!

When I was 14 I decided to cut my own hair. As the hours passed and the hair became less and less, me frantically trying to “even” it out, I realized that there was only one choice: shaving it off. And I don’t mean a buzz cut, but a complete shave because it was 3am and I could not find the clipper extension.

So yeah, that was the worst hair cut ever.
