Flashback Friday:The childhood joy of underwear

March 28, 2008

Over at Whoorl’s blog she asks her readers to write about their favorite childhood item.

What was my favorite childhood item?

My Batgirl Underoos.

I got them for Christmas when I was 4 and I was jumping up and down with excitement. I wanted them for the longest, longest time and begged and begged to get a pair.

I was also very clear that I wanted BATGIRL Underroos, NOT Wonder Woman Underoos.

Why, you ask?

Simple.

Batgirl Underoos looked like a bikini while Wonder Woman Underroos looked more like a one piece. Since I knew that my mom thought two-piece swimsuits were of the Devil, I knew there was no way on earth she would ever let have one, so I HAD to have the Batgirl kind.

I asked for Santa to bring them for Christmas. I hoped that he would and although I was nervous, I thought my chances were high. I mean, it was underwear, right? It’s not like I could shoot my eye out with them or anything. Although, now that I think about it, the fact that my most coveted gift was UNDERWEAR just kind of makes me depressed.

I didn’t have high aspirations, did I?

Anyway, Christmas day came and I ran down to see what Santa had laid out for me on the sofa.

I GOT THEM.

(That’s me, on the right. The other person that looks a bit like me is my twin sister. She got them, too.)

dsc02412-1.JPG

I still remember that Christmas. They were my favorite thing on the planet. They made me feel pretty and awesome ‘possum.

I LIVED in those things. I absolutely loved them. When I was a kid I didn’t really have any friends and so I lived a lot in my head and these blue and yellow babies were a major player in my fantasy world. I was so many things when I wore them-A super hero, a famous actress, a super-famous French horn player (What can I say? I was a weird kid.).

All was pretty well until the weather turned warm and I began wearing them outside like a swimsuit. Sunbathing, climbing cherry trees, playing in the sandpile, jumping on the trampoline and running up and down our street. I can’t tell you the times that I heard “LORALEE! DON’T YOU RUN AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD IN YOUR UNDERWEAR!!!!!” Things got really bad when I started going “European” and running around the neighborhood topless.

My poor mother had her hands full raising me. I think I was nine before I stopped twirling around on the choir stand at church to show off my ruffle-butt underwear with the pink and blue bows on them.

One day, my Bat Girl Underoos SUSPICIOUSLY DISAPPEARED.

My mother said that they were “Lost”.

Now that I am the mother of two boys and responsible for many, MANY…ehem…”LOST” items, I smell shenanigans and am not sure that I believe this explanation any longer.

If anyone knows if they have adult sized Bat Girl Underoos, let me know.

I would TOTALLY buy another pair.

What’s your favorite childhood item? If you blog about it, be sure and leave a link in my comments so we can read it. In the meantime, check out these other childhood faves!

I have a few favs from childhood (three of which I still have.)

    1) A stuffed smurf. My sisters had Papa Smurf and Smurfette, and I had just a generic smurf.
2)A red white and blue bouncy ball. I had it when I was a baby, but I loved the smell of it. So, I played with it even as I got older.
    3) My yellow blanket. It’s a painful subject that I can’t even talk about. (But notice I said MY yellow blanket.)
4)Rainbow Brite skates. They were still around outside in the kids play bin, until at Christmas when I was home, my nephew threw them in the ditch and they finally kicked the bucket. R.I.P. Rainbow Brite skates.

You remind me of my youngest daughter in this picture. You look just a little mischevious! I bet your mom did have a hard time with you. :)

I have to say I never had Batgirl Underoos.

LEGOS! Stompers, Matchbox Tranformers, and GIJoe I lived, breathed, bathed, smothered myself in those things.

There were times growing up where it was just me (WVa whoo hoo!) where I played by myself for hours with one or a few of those items. Elaborate outside setups with tunnels and roads and makeshift buildings….

I’ll admit, I only gave up legos with in the last few years (but I still build with my son occasionally)

I am also wondering WHY I DID NOT HAVE BATGIRL UNDEROOS.

I love the Batgirl underoos - very cool!

Some of my favourite things as a kid were a stuffed bear I’ve had since I was 5, all my books, and a dollhouse that my dad made for me from scratch that I got at Christmas.

My parents have a picture of my first reaction upon seeing the dollhouse near the tree (it was huge!), and the expression on my face is priceless. I was shocked and overjoyed, and about to pee my pants I was so excited. LOL.

My favorite was, belive it or not, was a two inch tall plastic red gorilla that I pulled from a box of Cracker Jacks (when they had real toys)
Your story of underwear is too cool as my grandaughters Mattie (4 1/2) and Brielle (3 1/2) are so diiferent in all their choices. Mattie loves boys batman and brielle is all princess.

How dare they get “lost”? Life is so cruel. I would have totally coveted them. I remember in Kindergarten that the girl that sat next to me at lunch had a Donny and Marie lunchbox that I wanted desperately. Those underwear would have made that list as well.

  17. The Over-Thinker says:

Hands down, my favorite item from my childhood is this dismembered-barbie-head with “real” hair that I could style and included “real” powder-blue eye shadow to apply.

Yes, it is true that I once brushed her “hair” with such ferocity that I actually took her head off the plastic pedastal, but I was still awesome with the eyeshadow!! Did you know you can put blue eye shadow UNDER the eyes for an even more dramatic (barbie-is-abused) night look?

Oh man. When I lived in Belgium I became quite familiar with the “European” bathing suit style–little girls swimming in tiny panties and nothing else?? That was highly disconcerting to me.

  19. Adam says:

I totally used to ROCK the ALF underoos. Gordon Shumway was the man! The neighborhood was constantly astonished by this toeheaded little freckle face invading their yards and riling up their dogs dressed in nothing but his underwear. Hot.

I was a total He-Man freak. FUH-REAK! I had everything. Bed spread, PJs, action figures including, but not limited to: Prince Adam (which in no way contributed to my adulation of the series. Nooooooo siree Bob.), Skeletor, The entire Castle Grayskull, Moss Man (the smell of which reminded me of vomit and peanut butter), and of course, Orko.

    BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!

  20. calicobebop says:

Underoos!! My favorite pair was Supergirl. In fact, I remember convincing my second grade teacher that it was “okay” for me to take off my wool sweater and sport the underoos for the rest of the day. Yep, I had an allergy to wool and that sweater was driving me up the wall! So, knowing that I had the ever-awesome Supergirl Underoos underneath I persuaded my teacher that my mom was totally okay with me taking my sweater off. Yep. A con artist in the second grade. Or maybe, an exhibitionist. Either/Or I stripped and flaunted my Supergirl prowess. It’s one of my best memories. Thanks for reminding me!
