Sideblog: Calling Etsy People?

February 19, 2008

I have a long-time friend who makes the most FREAKING ADORABLE retro-styled aprons.

She is so talented and can make anything (Including my wedding dress!)

She is just getting started in the wonderful world of the internet and I think that she would be much happier starting off having an Etsy shop vs. trying to set up her own site with a shopping cart as she has limited techie/geek skills.

Is this good advice?

I am wondering if any of you bloggity people that have an Etsy shop or are Etsy savvy would be willing to give her any tips and advice you might have? Kind of be a sounding board?

Anyone?

Stumble it!

    Etsy is EASY!!!

    And cheap.

Their FAQ is awesome – get her to check it out :)

    I agree with Angella…

  • Well more importantly, Etsy gets good traffic, more than you’ll get on your own unless you get some decent links from top sites.

  • I’d definitely go with Etsy. Even if it doesn’t take off for her immediately it’s cheap so she’s not out a lot of time and money. People who look there know things are handmade and appreciate it more than just some shop online. Totally worth a shot.

i vote for etsy, but i don’t know how much their fees are…

  • It’s only $0.20 to list an item. Yes, that’s twenty cents. Super cheap. And you get to post up to 5 pictures, I think, though it might be 6. Cheap!

Hi there! I’m delurking to add in another vote for Etsy… I am a huuuuge Etsy fan, and I know tons of other people who are as well. I would much, much rather spend the extra $5 to buy something made by hand, by someone who truly enjoys their craft, than something mass-produced in another country.

If she wants to give Etsy a shot, she should look into buying a spot in the Main Showcase. I definitely use the Showcase as a jumping off point when I’m just browsing for cute stuff, and I bet I’ve found more than half of my favorite sellers from that spot. As far as I know, the spots aren’t too expensive, and it’s great “advertising” for a new shop.

etsy shop. and then self promote like crazy (the one thing I am too lazy to do). By blog ads, leave comments all over with a link to her shop, flickr and join the flickr groups. Her shop will do well if people know where it is. Apron’s are big now, she could easily sell some.

-look for local craft shows to participate in
-local stores that carry handmade items etc.
    that’s my advice.

Okay first I want to know where I can get this apron. My step-mom-in-law’s birthday is coming up and it would be just the thing. (She is fun and I know she would love it) I agree with Heather about aprons being a hot item. We were just in Anthropologie and they had several which were very cute but not this cute. I don’t shop a lot on etsy but I have been linked to it through Goody Blog and Rare Bird Finds not to mention Outblush. I never just look at the item that linked me to etsy either.

I love etsy. I’m helping my sister start a shop and I’ll probably contribute some of my own stuff too.

  • Wow! Thanks for all of your comments! I am thrilled you like my apron! I will definitely look into the Etsy thing, it sounds like a win-win situation! If any of you are interested in getting an apron NOW you can email me http://www.iluverin@comcast.net

I don’t know what etsy is. But that apron is dang cute! Let us know when she’s up and running.

    me+Etsy=love

They seriously rock the house. And she would get lots of traffic. Getting traffic on a regular site might be tough. I vote for Etsy!
