PARTY POOPER

February 2, 2008

Am I the only person on the planet that isn’t going to watch the Super Bowl?

While I admit to LOVING Super Bowl commercials, I don’t watch the game to view them. I look at them later online.

I have never watched a Super Bowl Game.

Never.

In fact, the only time I have EVER watched even a little of it live, it just so happened to be the 2 minutes segment with Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson and I saw “The Great Boobie Incident of ‘04″.

(Just to add my imput, I totally believed Janet. I mean, doesn’t EVERY woman walk around with big hunks of metal hanging off of her nipples in case her jacket is ripped off by a boyish looking singer? I know I totally do. You can never be too prepared, right???)

I still find it amusing that I just happened to catch the most talked about Super Bowl incident in existence the one and only time I flipped the game on.

I just don’t like sports.

I actually like the vibe of going to live events, but I don’t think I could go often. Watching sports on television is just a big, fat “Yawn” to me.

My husband SWORE to me that he didn’t watch sports when we were dating and first married.

He has now become an huge basketball fan. He DVR’S and watches every.single.game. that The Utah Jazz play

Every time I hear “There’s a game tonight!”, I internally groan.

However, basketball isn’t nearly as weird and pointless to me as his other viewing enjoyment: “Ulitmate Fighting Championship”. Seriously, I do NOT get it. Every time he tells me a fight is coming up I internally scream, “Frick! Frack! My vorpal blade wants to go snickersnack!!!!!” ***

Usually a UFC fight means “Man Night”. Which means that 15-20 guys crowd in my living room and eat pizza while watching two dudes roll around on a mat wearing leotards.

That is ok, though. I’m glad he has something he enjoys doing and it is not very often that he gets to bond and hang out with other guys outside of work. I know that he needs time in his “Man Cave” doing “Manly Things” with his “Manly Friends”.

One thing that Jon doesn’t watch is football. Obviously I don’t either, so we never watch The Super Bowl.

For me, Super Bowl Sunday will consist of sleeping in,taking care of my cold-ridden husband, puttering around the house, going to rehearsal for “The Messiah” and probably making a pork roast.

Boring, but true.

So, are you going to be tuning in? Partying? Or are you going to be a dork like me and abstain from all things football?

AND?

For your amusement, here is the BEST SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL OF ALL TIME:

Yeah, I probably don’t get a gold star. But I did like the shot with the lint roller.

  • Mrs. Flinger says:

You know I’m all about the whole gathering thing. I mean, who’s playing again? But seriously, I’m invited over to eat and drink and chat? I’m there.

  • Sharon says:

I never, ever, ever watch sports on TV. To me it’s a total waste of my time.

  • Kimberly says:

Yeah, I’ll watch it but I don’t watch any other sports – except the Olympics. Hell, it’s a chance to eat cheese puffs. I gotta support that.

  • loralee says:

I can totally get behind the socializing and good party aspect, but no one has ever invited us to one.

I’m not sure if anyone I know is even doing anything for it today. If they are, I’m not invited.

Maybe it is because I have alienated myself due to vocalized sports dislike, or maybe it is because I smell, who knows?

    And?

I can also totally get behind the Olympics AND Cheese Puffs.

I’m not THAT much of a hater.

    Hee.

  • Doug says:

No way am I watching (and yes, it’s a big deal in Canada too). I watched baseball as a teenager, but stopped and now I only watch the Winter Olympics.

Besides, with the whole strike thing, I’m getting used to not watching tv, so what’s tomorrow gonna hurt?

  • I don’t mind the Olympics, but even then, only some of it. Really, any other sporting anything is bo-ring to me. NYDD watches BYU football (neither of us went there – don’t even ask me why he feels compelled to watch it :S) and sometimes when he wants to “relax” he’ll watch whatever’s on ESPN. I can’t even stand it. I mean, really? Golf? That’s not even fun to watch IRL! Like I want to watch it on TV. Thankfully we don’t watch the Superbowl. I’d rather shove bamboo skewers under my fingernails.

  • witchypoo says:

The reference is to a quote my database instructor told us “Getting an IT team to work together properly is like herding cats”

  • Marilyn says:

Not planning to watch, no. We’re definitely not big sports people and generally don’t watch it on tv. I can see where the Super Bowl might be on tomorrow. But we could very well just be out shopping at that time and then playing Xbox too. :)

  • I am Sooo glad to know I am not the only that doesn’t like to watch sports!! (Yeah, Except the Olympics! I love those too!) I am from Texas so football is pretty much a way of life here and I am looked at as weird for not liking it! I didn’t even know who was playing until a student asked me yesterday, who I was rooting for!

I know how you feel when you internally groan when you hear there’s a game. I literally dread Football season! So I am kind of glad tomorrow’s Super Bowl Sunday because that marks the end of a another season!

    Yeah!!

Oh and Loralee thanks for the comment on my blog! It made my day!!!

  • rachel says:

Jabberwocky.. thank you very much! You rock because you know that!!!
I won’t be watching. I’ll be playing with kids, blogging and skimming commercials :-)
Amazing how the ‘real’ person comes out after the papers are signed, y’know :-) LOL.!

  • Angella says:

    We are dorks!

Matthew likes football (though basketball is his fortay), but he says that the game never lives up to the hype.

I love the commercials, though :)

  • Lisa says:

I never watch the Super Bowl either, boring snoring. While my husband doesn’t watch football, he does watch and record endless golf and… wait for it… FISHING shows. Yes, fishing. Fishing is on year round! There are a ton of fishing shows on each weekend. That is why we have two tv’s.

  • Bridge says:

I’ll be skiing… let me know the best commercials to watch!

  • One HUGE reason I married the man I did is because he hates football as much as I do! We have an “Anti-Superbowl” party, where I get to make yummy appetizers, and fun finger foods, and watch “Lord of the Rings” or the “Bourne” trilogy… and NO commercials!

  • Jennifer says:

I’ll be the other person not watching tomorrow.

    First time visiting here–good stuff!

  • jess says:

of COURSE i’ll be watching. i’m a football NUT.

  • Froyd says:

hu-freakin’-zah for the jabberwocky reference! The vorpal blade!

  • “one two and through and through his vorpal blade when snicker snack. He left it dead and with its head he went galumpfing back.”

    :) I’m a dork.

Actually, my son just had to memorize that so I’ve heard it a bit lately. And I hate sports too–but that same son happens to be rabid about football so I’ve had to like it. Dang it. It’s the only conversation we have sometimes. “Tom Brady . . . . ” yada yada yada.

    Doug:
    I.EFFING.HATE.THE.STRIKE.

Instead of 22 episodes of Lost we get EIGHT? WTF? GRRRR.

    hairyshoefairy:
Next year WHEN YOU ARE HERE I say that we have an alternative activity. You know, WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE SAME STATE!!!! HEE!!

    witchypoo:
My husband is head of IT of a software company and he concurs. :)

    Marilyn:
    I miss our xbox. Sigh.

    Jen From 2Bee’s Hive:
No problem at ALL! I am a comment whore. It makes me sad that I can’t read and talk on every blog in existence. I still get completely, unabashedly GIDDY when I have comments in my inbox (From non-trolls, of course)

    rachel :

I know. He also didn’t have a beard and I haven’t seen his chin in like, nine years! (*Gold star for YOU!)

    Angella:
Nah, I would say you are way more in the majority of the two countries than I am. I do love the commercials. I can’t help it.

    Lisa says:
    FISHING AND GOLF?
I suddenly feel the need to applaud the selection of basketball by my husband.
    You POOR THING.

    Bridge:
I have a feeling the lines will be SHORT tomorrow.

    Erin Evans Taylor:

Dude. I can TOTALLY see you doing this. TOTALLY.
SEE? We should have opened an inn. Or a catering service. Of course, I would have just been in the way, but it STILL would have been AWESOME.

    Jennifer:
Welcome, welcome! I always like new people that pop in!

    jess:
And yet, I really like you anyway!
    Hee

    Froyd :

It is my FAVORITE line of the poem. Huzzah, indeed!

    Michelle at Scribbit:
I had this memorized by Kindergarten and presented it for show and tell. I also did a presentation on taxation without representation. (My dad used to illustrate the meaning by “Taxing” our cones. I learned quickly.) Talk about DORK.

  • Dennis says:

You’re totally in good company. There’s lots of us “no superbowl” fans. We never watch it either. We’ll probably go out to eat tonight and grab a video.
    Enjoy!

  • Gretchen says:

We’ll be watching the game, if by ‘watching’ you mean eating copious amounts of food and drinking either beer or margaritas. Some of the neighbors are coming over, and we’re just using it as a socializing event. You’re welcome to stop by!

Love the cat commercial. When the wee ones were even smaller (five, three, and one) and I took them anywhere, I referred to it as ‘herding cats.’

  • krissy says:

    Hey there…

I’m new to your blog and I must say, your forwardness is so awesome! I love it! You are energizing!

Well, I’m a huge, huge football fan so I can’t say we feel the same there but the cat hearding commercial was the best! The last few years the commercials have been a bit lame but maybe theres hope this year!!

I’ll come back to visit soon!

  • Amber says:

I’ve never watched a Super Bowl game either. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever watched any football game, ever, all the way through. Not even a homecoming game in high school. I enjoy taking dorkiness to new levels.

Also, I love cats. The end.

  • Jes says:

LORALEE! You just completed my life. I remember seeing the commercial a few years ago when I was forced to watch the game, and I still talk about it. Just last night I was knitting with friends describing that commercial in all its wonderfulness. I didn’t even think of finding it on YouTube. Thank you!

  • G’day from Australia,

It’s already Monday morning here, but yep, I’ll follow the game and one of my colleagues is a mad keen Super Bowl aficionado.

  • Pink says:

like i tell all of my guy friends – i had enough of football when i was in high school and forced to attend every home game and cheer for our team. no, thank goodness, i wasn’t a cheerleader (i would have shot myself), but i was in musically gifted and we were forced to sing at every home game and cheer or else. if i was going to watch men hit each other, i’d watch wrestling.

  • loralee says:

    Dennis:
A video is sounding REALLY good right now.

    Krissy:
    Welcome, welcome!
And…Sounds like your DMV SUCKS. My condolences. :S

    Gretchen:
HA! Now THAT is a hilarious term for wee ones.

    Amber:
Ok, you have me beat, but most of the games I went to were to watch my high school boyfriend or because I was in pep squad as a sophmore (Before I knew better)

    Jes:
YAY! Anything for you, babe! It cracks me up every single time I see it.

    David:
Loved your site. You are one talented photo person!

    Pink:
I was in pep squad. It sucked. :(

  • andi says:

Ya. I don’t watch it (haven’t ever) because I don’t know the rules. And I’m too lazy to learn. Even more blasphemous is the fact that I don’t watch (or know the rules of) hockey. Shh, don’t tell my fellow Canadians.

  • I’m reading this post during the Super Bowl.

    Not watching, of course!

  • HRH says:

When you listed the best SB commercial of all time I said, “It has to be the cat herders!” Yeah! Great taste. The game is on…but (yawn!) I am on the computer (OH, that yawn was for the game, not your blog! No, I am happy to be here…and why haven’t I been here before?) I agree with you about the game and the fantastic cat commercial.

  • Erin says:

The Superbowl is on in my home right now… but I am not watching. I will admit to trying to catch a few commercials and the half time show- That’s it.

  • Jack says:

The Superbowl is my favorite secular holiday.

  • I am with you. Football? I forget. Is that the round ball? or the oval?

  • sarah bean says:

On the planet? No. We don’t even have super bowl. In fact, I’m not even sure – it’s baseball right? Yeah, we don’t have baseball here. Or maybe it’s that thing where they wear the huge shoulder pads and weird masks? We don’t have -whateverthatis- either. I watched that drew barrymore movie Perfect Catch or something the other night on tv and bemoaned to my hubby that we don’t have anything to get so excited about over here. But then I remembered that most Kiwis get that excited about rugby so I guess it’s actually just me. I did have a point but I think it may have got lost in there somewhere…
Why do I always get verbal diahorrea in your comments section? Sorry about that.

  • natalie says:

i live in turkey where the game actually was being shown…at 1 in the morning. my husband along with several other guys all stayed up late and watched the game. i went to bed. and to because they are crazy… several of them are getting together tonight to watch it again…replayed at 7! again i choose not to watch. they don’t show the commercials on tv here anyway so i would enjoy absolutely nothing about the game. the best part would be watching the guys jumping around beating their chests and making fools of themselves. but even that gets old!

  • Melly says:

We dont like sports here at our house. No super bowl here.

  • Jenera says:

I found you through David McMahon’s blog :)

This year was the first year that I actually watched the game from start to finish. I typically stay busy with other things and only watch commercials.

I’m not sure why I watched this time maybe because I was stuck with the hubby at a friend’s house and there wasn’t much else to do, lol.

    Lo,
For some reason everyone thinks I love sports so I am constantly asked what sports I like to play or watch. But here’s my secret I’ve never watched a full sporting event of any kind on the T.V. I hate them. there is honestly nothing more boring than televised sports. I’d rather die. And no I didn’t play football in High school.
