But I was raised with a very anti-Mormon Southern Baptist for a grandmother. (Yes, I realize that this is not ALL Baptists. I really do.) However, I don’t think even she would stoop to this level. It makes me physically ill. The whole site does.
Somehow, despite all my issues with God or Mormonism at the moment, I really don’t think he’s up there giving kudos to such hideousness. I just don’t. I don’t give a crap what issues they have.
A man died. A good man. He was a father and grandfather. Even if you are out there thinking he is in the fires of hell, have some freaking human decency, yo. Have your little party of rejoicement at home and leave his family and followers in peace to mourn him.
(P.S. I realize linking here may be a troll magnet but I could NOT see this without saying that this.behavior.is.wrong. My comment moderation is in full swing on this one. Tread carefully.)

I tried to go to the sight but I’m at work and it was blocked due to “racism and hate.” I think I now what you are refering to and it is really low.
YUP. The flier was foul.
AND?
They are PICKETING HIS FUNERAL.
Seriously?
Seriously.
Hideous, huh?
That is the most disgusting piece of hatred I’ve ever seen. I wanted to throw up when I read this. Why can’t people freaking just leave us alone? We don’t hurt anybody. Just because you don’t agree with someone’s beliefs doesn’t mean that you can’t respect people who are mourning a loss. How does that help anyone? Do they really think that hatred will win them followers to their faith? I am truly saddened by this.
Unbelievable.
I am a God-loving Baptist. The God I believe in loves EVERYBODY. And, um, I believe that “ALL have sinned, and fall short…”
Maybe the people behind the protest need to actually READ THE BIBLE.
Jesus hung out with the “sinners” – people who the religious leaders of the day shunned and rejected.
This kind of stuff gives true Christians (*waves*) a bad name.
I personally leave the judgment up to God. I’ll just stick to loving people.
Sigh.
i’m southern. we all know that. i’m not a baptist, but then again, not many people in the south aren’t, and i was raised baptist. a good baptist doesn’t picket people’s funerals. they don’t send out fliers. in fact, i’m pretty sure they don’t even mention hell. they just say he’s not going to heaven. and last i checked, just b/c he was a mormon didn’t mean he didn’t believe in GOD, right? the people who did this are showing they’re not good christians, and as a southern christian, i’m ashamed of them, and apologize on their behalf for their terrible behavior.
Rachel: I guess they must.
Angella: Yes, but Baptists like you give Christianity a good name. :)

We were commenting at the same time!
When I was little I thought ALL Baptists hated all Mormons. (Sorry for that, but I only knew one Southern Baptist and well, she made her feelings very known).
The Mormon church is one organization. It has a headquarters, what they teach is the same pretty much everywhere you go, etc. etc.
It took me awhile to figure out how other churches work. That besides the Catholics, we are pretty singular in the way we are organized.
I realized that these are individual congregations that usually are disapproved of by other Christians that don’t tolerate “Hatred” of others.
My grandmother was not southern, she was just a Southern Baptist.
My mom’s family is all southern and I have nothing but high regard for the south. (Unless I am mocking my friend Rachel about Lousiana. All in good fun, though.)
I am so used to people hating Mormonism and saying terrible things about it. You get used to it.
My RAGE is that this is a FUNERAL. For his family and loved ones.
It goes beyond human belief that anyone for any reason could think that this is ok.
This group is the same group that spoke out about Heath Ledger being in hell for portraying (a word I can’t say) and they also picket soldiers’ funerals. They believe that soldiers in Iraq are dying to punish America for supporting homosexuality.
Whatever. This group is classified as a hate group. They are extremists. They are not Baptists. I haven’t heard of anyone anywhere who believes that they are anything other than sour, nasty people rotting in their own hatred…
I believe they were also sued by the family of a soldier whose funeral they barged in on. Hopefully the lawsuits will continue. But then they just get more foul publicity…
That makes me physically ill and intensely sad. Let the family mourn in peace.
aren’t these the same people that picketted Heath Ledger’s funeral with almost the same flier…”God hates fags”? Disgusting.
I think you have to note the source: nutbars. They must be hoping to round up all the nutbars in the country, and get together for one big hate-in. They sure are getting publicity.
wow. i wrote a post in December called “God Loves Fags” – wonder if my funeral will be protested as well.
yikes.
http://paintedmaypole.blogspot.com/2007/12/god-loves-fags.html
most of the other commenters have already said it well, but yeah, i’ll chime in too. what a load of filth and junk and EVIL. i follow jesus. i certainly DO NOT want to be lumped in with a hate-group like this. those people are the saddest kind.
When I was younger, if my parents or anyone in the family was fighting, my little sister would always say, “That makes my heart hurt”, I’d always make fun of her sensitive feelings, but hearing this “makes my heart hurt”…
I just dont even fathom how someone could do that….feeling that sort of hatered is beyond me.
Well these people even protested a Southern Baptist Convention. So it’s clear they aren’t the norm.
These people disgust me and make me sick, but is it wrong I’m glad they add crazy stuff like this to their activities.
I mean…when you are protesting a Mormon leader and Heath Ledger I feel it takes major credibility away from their anti-gay sentiments.
I have seen these people protesting before outside showings I went to of The Laramie Project. I just can’t even handle them.
This is horrible! The number one issue is; he was a MAN, regardless of his regligious affiliation and these people arne’t letting his family morn his death. I hate that they call themselves baptists or christians because I know that most baptists don’t feel the same way they do. And I know that a true christian wouldn’t picket a mans funeral because of his belief. I’ve also heard that they picket soldiers funerals for the war because it supports gays and they were planning on picketing Heath Legers funeral (until they found out it was in Australia) because he played a Gay actor. It’s just so lame. These people just need to be ignored and for all the Mormons that are going to his funeral they just need to act like they are invisible. Because the more attention they get the harder they will push. It’s just like General Conference with all the picketing. People don’t always believe the same thing, that what makes everyone unique. GRRR.
That is just plain SICK. I don’t even know who the guy is that died, but the family certainly doesn’t deserve all that hatred. And to echo the other sentiments here, God does NOT hate anybody–hate is an ugly human trait. God has unconditional love.
A year ago, we went to a soldier’s funeral–he died in the Iraq war, and the family was told that a group was going to picket the funeral. Well, in Virginia, that doesn’t usually fly–we are full of pride for our country and our soldiers. I’m glad it never happened, but to think that the grieving family would have to deal with that too, is just horrible.
As a Christian, I try to have love for everyone. And the key word here is “try” because I know that’s what Jesus would do. This doesn’t mean that I agree with everyone, but I certainly don’t condemn people for not agreeing with me.
funerals are a time for the family and friends to say their goodbyes and mourn for their loved ones. so not a time for people to be picketing and protesting and just plain being a pain in the ass.
hey, until i read a little more into it, i used think all mormons were like that warren jeffs dude.
The WBC are just SUCH nice people!
They also issued a press release about Heath Ledger’s death too, condemning him to a life of damnation because he played gay onxe. His 2-year-old daughter must be so ashamed.
LL, if it makes you feel any better, Phelps saves his real venom for us fags.
I honestly don’t know what to think about the WBC anymore. They make absolutely no sense. I mean, even the KKK has a specified target of their hatred (wrong indeed), but the WBC’s target seems to be humanity in general. Is there anything they haven’t protested?
I may have just submitted an incomplete comment…sorry, it’s early. What I was saying is this:
I, too, wrote a similar post a few weeks ago following Heath Ledger’s death. Not being religious or a believer, I posed the thought that hopefully, the God that people believe in would value decent, kind and good (how basic is that?) human beings (such as Gordon Hinckley or Heath Ledger, who by all accounts was a good friend and amazing father) over someone like Fred Phelps who’s main objective in life is to spread hate and intolerance.
It makes me sick too. So, I’m going to move and and re-read your post about Journey, Air Supply & ABBA. I feel better already.
I heard about this on a radio show. I heard her talking. I was appalled. In a very “this is not funny” kind of a way. AT ALL.
This is why I no longer associate with ANY religion of any kind. I believe in kindness and in people and I’d like to think that is enough.
