I got in to “The King & I”.
Er…Here is the cast list:
Did you catch that? You know, the AMAZON part? I guess now on my resume I can put amazon down down along with men, nuns, whores, bitches, and alcoholics. It makes me sound so attractive.
It’s ok. You can laugh.
The thing is, I thought that I checked the box stating I couldn’t take a choral role, but I guess I was wrong. I usually don’t do choral roles in community productions. Mainly because of the time commitment I have kids, a busy life, friends, a blog. With the chorus it’s sort of “Been there done that. A LOT.”. I also shy away from Community chorus roles because unless the chorus is big, and no matter how hard I try, I tend to stick out like I sore thumb vocally and I HATE that.
However, since I have never, EVER, backed out of a show I have been cast in because I didn’t get the part that I wanted, and since I have no intention of starting now, it’s done. The minute my name was typed onto that list, I was obligated.
I really don’t want to be in the chorus of this particular show because I don’t really like the chorus music. I really like choruses of some shows, like “The Music Man” or “Brigadoon”.
Not this show.
“Uncle Tom’s Cabin” makes me want to stick a fork in my eye repeatedly. There are usually three reasons to be in The King and I as a girl and those are 1. Wearing awesome, flouncy dresses as Anna. 2. Singing an awesome song as Lady Tiang and 3. Being hot, young, and soprano-like as Tuptim.
Amazon is not exactly on the top of my list. BUT. I will just FIND things to like about this situation! I will be working with people I really like, the theater is an amazing space, and well…It’s still a show. Loads of people didn’t even get in, so that is something.
There is one hitch, though. I emailed the director asking if my boys could still be in the production (I honestly didn’t think I’d be doing it so I didn’t have them audition. It’s a package deal I’m afraid. I can’t leave them for that long.)
If he says they can be in the show, I will be professional, give it my all and be out on stage holding a spear and wearing a metal bra in January.
