Gone Fishin’

My brother, Brad, came to Logan with his family from Minneapolis for a few days and he wanted to go fishing and canoing. Brad is married to a very sweet woman named, Candy. Candy is from Mexico and has a very heavy accent that makes understanding her difficult at times. For example, she pronounces my name “LoLee” without the “R”, which is cute because that was my mom’s nickname for me growing up.

Candy brought an inflatable raft that she wanted to use with the kids, but she didn’t have paddles for it. When we were unloading the canoe from the car with Jon and my brother she came up to us:

Candy: “LoLee, did you bring along extra whores with you?”

Jonathan: “If she did, this afternoon just got a WHOLE lot more interesting!”

Brad: “Honey, it’s OARS. Not WHORES.

Needless to say, we all had quite a bit of merriment over the whole thing after Candy finished blushing and I stopped hitting Jonathan with my tackle box.
While Jon and Candy were there for the boating, I was there for the fishing!

I like to fish. I’m particular about the type of fishing that I do and where I go. I fish off of a dock at a place called First Dam (First because there are three in Logan on the Logan River.) I am also particular about the bait I use- Lean hamburger on a treble hook.

Fishing is exciting for me. I know, I know, but it’s like a game of cat a mouse and I like it. I don’t know why more girls don’t like fishing. I think it’s awesome. I meet very few females while I’m fishing, though. None of my friends get my fishing fettish. Actually, very few people in my life get it, except maybe my sister, Melly. She fishes with me, so I suppose it isn’t a huge shock.me-and-melly21.jpg

Melly and I have excellent luck when we fish, but the fishing gene seems to have alluded both of my brothers. We can pull fish after fish out of the water and they can’t catch one to save their lives. It just isn’t fair.

Whatever the reason, Melly and I had a pretty productive fishing run last night. dsc01577.JPGAlthough he didn’t land anything, Brad actually hooked the biggest fish of the day, but the sucker was so big his line broke. :(

Why and how I got stuck cleaning and gutting all the fish is beyond me. It totally grossed out my nieces. I admit, cutting the heads off fish and cleaning them isn’t my idea of fun, but I’m a firm believer in cleaning and eating whatever you cook if you hunt or fish. If I don’t have the guts to clean a fish (Pun so intended) I have no business fishing in the first place.

Besides, the end result of trout in butter, chives and garlic with lemon is worth the ickiness.

Yum.

Let the whores do the fishing–I’ll eat chicken!

I love to fish, but I never have much luck. So after awhile I just enjoy the scenery and relax in the boat. My husband seems to always catch the big ones, but won’t clean them, so I do it. Not fun, but I did love dissecting in science class. We usually fry ours with a yummy coating. By the way, you mentioned a while back that someone thought it was funny that you had a fan club in Minnesota. You can add one more, because I’m up in Minnesota too.

I’ll eat the fish, but cleaning it kind of grosses me out.

My father was the ultimate fisherman, summer and winter! Actually, he caught even bigger fish from his fish house than from his boat! And his beer-batter deep fried walleye was to die for!

Sorry, should have added, he fished in northern Minnesota, Leech Lake and Steamboat Lake.

Leech Lake is really close to where we go fishing. We go to northern Minnesota a couple times during the summer. We go to two different lakes not too far from Walker and Park Rapids. I grew up going to a resort on Lake Winnibigoshish (what a name!) in the same general area. South-Central Minnesota is where I call home the rest of the year.

I can not handle fishing. I hate touching the bait and then touching the fish and then cleaning the fish. I seriously can’t handle it.

However I LOVE that you fish. I’m always thrilled seeing women do things that not a lot of other women will do. Plus I think it rocks that you make sure to eat and use whatever you catch. :)

for years I heard how good fish was, how wonderful my former mil made it, “tastes just like chicken”. If I want anything that tastes just like chicken, I will go for the chicken. If I want anything that tastes like fish, I must be extremely drugged up and delirious as I do not like to even look at the smelly gross creatures. I am with Karen, pass the chicken.
Loved Candy’s “whores”. Made me smile for so many reasons.

I love to fish, although I am more partial to fly fishing – more action and less worms suits me fine. Craig has tried to get into fly fishing too but he has yet to have a lot of luck and I am worried he will give up soon. As far as cleaning goes, I find some boy to do it for me, that’s what brothers and husbands are for.

I love to fish, but I’ve never had “the guts” to clean them afterwards. I haven’t gone fishing in a while, though. But the best catfish I ever ate, I caught and cooked myself.

i eat meat but lately i’ve been feeling that i shouldn’t unless i kill and clean it myself – that would also ensure less waste, you know? i’m weird like that. but i love the pictures of you cleaning, you look so absorbed, and that dinner sounds very worth it. :)

I use to love fishing (in like.. fourth grade). Right up until the point I became way too sensitive to killing (not to say you’re not – I’m just a fweak).

You look so damned cute in your pigtails and fishing hat I can hardly stand it.

And to answer your question about BlogHer – it would have been a lot more fun had there been more of “us” there… I saw a few people I read – but none of the people that made me want to squeal with excitement.

I think it would be really fun if next year we tried to get a bunch of us together to go. It’s one of those things where if you have a few friends it’s a blast. Or at least that’s how I felt.

And I didn’t know to do certain things that I will know for next time.

    Okay, BlogHer infomercial over.

Oh, I know! The whores have to clean the fish you catch! That was funny, although she was embarrassed.

My husband and daughter love to fish, but I am allergic so I figure, what’s the point? I stay at home and read while they get up early. I am such a whore.

You just make me laugh! I love that your a girl that can fish. I wish I could have the patience for fishing but I don’t and I’m not sure I could clean/gutt them… eww!

    avatar Amber says:

I failed my girl’s camp certification because I refused to gut a fish. Just watching you brings back memories.

And sitting there with a fishing pole for hours on end? You can have allllll those men out there who do it. Because to catch one, you have to touch one. And I’m afraid I am painful girly about that.

Karen- Alas, we will just have to put this realm of food under the “We agree to disagree” category! ;)

Glossy-It really isn’t too bad once you’ve done it a lot. I have to admit, though, if I do too many, it puts me off eating it. So it is best to spread out the cleaning duty if you can.

Sharon-Just the title sounds delicious. I have actually always wanted to try ice fishing, but i’m such a wuss when it comes to the cold! That, and you know, the perpetual fear of falling through the ice…

Lori-Welcome, welcome! I heart Minnesotans more than I can say!!!!!! Bemidji Sate is pretty much responsible for a lot of the growth of this little place and I totally heart the whole lot!

Angela-Actually, I didn’t realize this would be a perk for me when I started, but I totally dig that I’m a “Fish Chick”. :)

Mary Mellon-You just wait. One day, I will pull the grief card and you’ll be forced to come with me. Ask others. They’ve all been subjected to the hell. :)GRIN.

Mackenzie-I think I would injure my uncoordinated self if I tried to fly fish! Disaster, I’m sure. I have to be able to see what’s going on around my hook. It makes it more of a game. It’s too frustrating for me otherwise.

Rachel-I have yet to try catfish. My hubs says it’s yummy, though.

Bee-Oh, it is so much damn work that I could never do it consistently, but yep.If you kill it, you should eat it. I can’t eat meat I wasn’t raised on (Like Elk) I just can’t. I don’t know why. So…It’s really just fishing with me.

Macpiper-That’s not what you said last night. KIDDING!

Brother-Awe. You know I love you. I don’t think you should give up yet! :*(

Holli-See, if that were the scenario (Having awesome friends that I was uberexited to meet) I would probably go. I just am afraid I would talk WAAAAY too much (Ask people who meet me. It’s a problem.) alienate everyone and walk away feeling inferior about my blog. Well, I have a whole year to work on that, I guess. So, yah. Assuming it’s doable $$$ Wise, I call dibbs on rooming with you! Now we just have to sucker others into it!
Do you know where it will be held in 2008?

Occidental-SEE! This is why I have internet friends. I never would have thought about exploiting the whores!!!

Just Me-It took me a couple of times to get over it, but eventually, it stopped bothering me.

Amber- Heh. They are slimy and it can get pretty darn grody. Seriously, there is no reason on earth I SHOULD like it, I just do!

I’m just stuck on the “extra” part of the phrase. “EXTRA whores”?? EXTRA? What’s she trying to say about you?
Okay, I’ll quit teasing. She sounds adorable. :)
